[SOLVED] Trouble after removing Cinnamon

Post by h3kt0r »

Hi, i'm new to Linux and i've ran into some trouble after removing Cinnamon and switching to Xfce.
A whole bunch of programs now won't launch anymore or just crash on startup.
A small list : Steam won't launch anymore. MPV (video player) just freeze the computer and then crash. Scummvm opens up an empty window, then freeze the system before crashing. And a few other programs.
What steps should i take to fix this behavior ? I don't know what to look for or from where all the trouble is coming.
Here are my system specs :

Did you do a fresh install of Mint Xfce, or remove the Cinnamon desktop and install Xfce in the same install.

Possibly tying into Kevin's point here, it is never a good idea to install LM cinnamon, nuke cinnamon and install another desktop environment or install LM xfce, nuke it and install cinnamon, as well as any mixture involving from mate to another or another to mate.

If it usually best to just pick a particular flavor of Mint and see if it's the right one for you before installing a bunch of programs and adding media files ( docs, pics, music, videos/movies..etc) if at all possible.

Weird things always happen otherwise when you install a desktop into an installation that came stock with a different one.

Arch may be a reasonable exception to this.

This is what many people say about this particular issue.

For those wanting to try out different desktops in Linux Mint without doing a complete install each time, Xfce should be the base system installed.

Other desktops can be installed on top of Xfce and usually there isn't a problem.

Results may vary if Xfce is installed on top of Cinnamon.

Installing Cinnamon as the base and then ripping it out for another desktop is highly frowned upon and best of luck fixing it.

the principle issue here, is that folks are not realizing,
just how much the Desktop Environment is tied to the LinuxMint file system.

thus, the removal of any Desktop Environment files, can mess up the System Files.

you can mix & match the Desktop Environment,
but, it is limited to a few methods.

- Mate will work with Cinnamon & Kde, but not with Xfce, for example.
- Xfce will work with Cinnamon & Kde . .
- Kde doesn't like Cinnamon ..

as always, YMMV . .

All right, i see now. Well, i'll stick with this Mint install. It's not that bad, after all. MPV is not working ? Well, VLC does. SMPlayer too. Steam won't launch ? Damn, i don't care : Wine will do with a bunch of classic games. Scummvm does crash ? Nevermind, i have a Playgo running OpenDingux.
Nobody's perfect. Mint still rocks, anyway.
Thank you !
