LM 20.3 Cinnamon stuck at unpacking linux-headers

Post by ghoultek »

I installed LM 20.3 cinnamon into virtual box with a 15 GB *.vdi file. After the install and reboot I ran the update to the mint update application and then kicked off the updates. The process stops at:

Code: Select all

Unpacking linux-headers-5.4.0-96-generic (5.4.0-96.109)
The update stays stuck there for more than an hour. My internet connection is working properly. The host has plenty of storage space and memory (32 GB) and I'm running on a ryzen 7 3700x CPU. The VM has 8 GB RAM allocated to it and 4 CPUs (threads).

I aborted the update, did a forced shutdown, and did another clean install of the OS. After the first reboot I ran the update to the mint update application. This time I picked local mirrors, and then kicked off the updates. It again stops at the same point and its been about 1h 40 mins. Is there a bug or server issue? I've run updates on other distros in virtual box and the complete without error.

I'm no expert on VM's, but I think you need to allocate at least 30GB to the .vdi.

Is this a new or recent requirement with Linux Mint? I've had much older LM installs in VM's with 15 or 20 GB vdi files and the update app did not stall like the recent one did. I have other distros in 15 GB VMs with 8GB RAM running KDE and they update pretty quick.

From Mint's website:
...
20GB of disk space (100GB recommended).
...

15 GB for the VM's hard disk isn't enough, hence your problem.

Thanks JerryF. I deleted the VM's vdi file and created a 40 GB vdi. I went through the steps to install the OS, update the update manager app., pick local mirrors and then ran the updates. The update still took 1hr and 2 minutes. Its seems odd to me for the update to take that long.

I have always made 40 GB vdi size, back in LM17 because of that problem.

Hmm...you're right. Updates shouldn't take that long.

If you could post the results of the following command from the VM's Mint, maybe someone can help.

Code: Select all

I did notice one interesting thing from your inxi report:

Code: Select all

CPU: Topology: Quad Core model: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X bits: 64 type: MCP arch: Zen L2 cache: 2048 KiB
           flags: avx avx2 lm nx pae sse sse2 sse3 sse4_1 sse4_2 sse4a ssse3 bogomips: 28745
           Speed: 3593 MHz min/max: N/A Core speeds (MHz): 1: 3593 2: 3593 3: 3593 4: 3593
All 4 cores of your CPU seems to be running at maximum which may be causing the problem. Not sure I can help, but will research.

Also, a good GUI program to install within the VM Mint is System Monitor (Gnome-system-monitor). You'll find it in Software Manager.

Here's a sample of one of it's windows titles Resources:
