Laptop won't wake up on opening the lid.

Post by TmDobbin »

Hi everyone, I'm new to these forums and I've tried to figure out where to ask this question, pretty sure this is the right place but apologies if it isn't!
Just installed Linux Mint 20.3 alongside Windows 11, and when I close the laptop screen it seems to turn off, but opening the lid just gives me a black screen. I have tried:
-Installing the 5.16 kernel, both from the mainline and the tuxinvader ppa. No idea if that was a good idea, but it doesn't fix my problem and I knew GRUB would save me if anything went wrong. (this worked on ubuntu, but not mint)
-Typing my password at the black screen (no effect)
-Various different solutions online (no luck)
My laptop is the Acer Swift 3 SF314-42, with the AMD Ryzen 3 4300U, if that's important at all. I can provide any other information if needed. Thanks in advance.

Update - after a reinstall of 20.3, closing the lid now seems to turn the screen off, but the fans continue running. Screen turns back on after opening the lid. This behavior is on kernel 5.4, but kernel 5.4 breaks my brightness controls. So, 5.4 allows suspend (i think?) but no brightness controls, whereas 5.5+ allows brightness controls but no suspend. All of these features worked on Ubuntu 21.04 with kernel 5.16, but not on Mint, which I prefer.

Personally,
I turn OFF
  • Suspend
    HIbernate
    Sleep
and set Lid closed to Do Nothing.

works like a charm, when I open the lid, the screensaver is activated, and I touch the space bar and off I go.

Psensor
tells me that the laptop idles back down way way low, so that is good enough.

Thank you so much! Gave it a shot today by using my laptop this morning, then leaving it for about 6 hours with the lid closed, and battery only dropped from 46% to about 32%, which is probably about normal for no use. Until the proper suspend works, this is a perfectly good workaround. Thanks again!

on Battery power only, I have my power settings set at 10 minutes and it shuts down, if I am not using it, and up and close the lid....

I have made it a habit, that every thing is Saved before I leave the computer, so if it "disappears" due to shutting down, the file is safe.
