Internal SSD shows up in Live System, but not in FoxClone (SOLVED)

Post by frostymusic »

I have a Patriot Burst 256gb SSD, that I have installed to store my BackinTime and Timeshift. I wanted to create a Image with FoxClone. When I boot with FoxClone it does not show that drive.

Also it reports as less space.
Patriot Burst in Disks.png

And why does it report Part-1?
PatriotBurstin Gparted.png
I have used Gparted in Live System and Boot with Live Disk, same results.

Thoughts please?

I don't see a "Part-1" in either of your images.

Well I discovered that the drive in in ROOT for some reason, using Disks again, deleted the partition, added the partition, now it is no longer in ROOT, BackinTime sees it TimeShift sees it, now to try FoxClone!

Unless he is very busy with something person or busy related..I'm willing to bet AndyMH ( the Foxclone dev) will post a comment here reasonably soon that will prove to be helpful. He's done well on helping out others on this site for years with not only Foxclone but other problems. I apologize for I have nothing helpful to offer yet.

I wonder why you have a calculator or phone next to your partition:

either you forgot, or never knew the fact that Gparted always produces partitions as a Root Owned partition.

you must change ownership of the partition after the fact.

if you used Gparted to create the partition, Foxclone will not see it while running normally, but if you use Gparted from the Foxclone menu, you will then be able to see it.

Boot your foxclone stick, open a terminal and run sudo parted --list. Post the output. To do that you can either:
  • connect to the internet - how is explained in the user guide and use the palemoon browser in foxclone to connect to the forum.
  • copy the terminal output into a file using the text editor (mousepad) in foxclone, save it and then copy the file to one of the drives in your system using the file manager.
Foxclone uses parted to identify the drives/partitions in your system.

They're both basing off the same number of Bytes-- 240,056,459,591.
It's just that Disks (like the Patriot Marketing Department) is doing base-10 math vs. gparted doing (correct) base-2 math

240... / 10^9 (1,000,000,000) = 240 GB
240... / 2^30 (1,073,741,824) = 223.57 GiB

Well I did not know that Gparted did that (root), making a note of that.

Andy, when I was last in Foxclone, I found my Ethernet connection, but it would not connect. I was expecting a request for the password but it never displayed, hence no Pale Moon access. I will look at it again.

That is it for now.

Oh,djph, thanks for that explanation on the drive size.

There are the results of sudo parted --list, and just to refresh, BackinTime sees it and Timeshift sees it, and both will create backups on that SSD.

Cheers!

A 256GB drive is not showing in the parted output you posted, which would explain why foxclone doesn't see it. Why it is not showing - don't know.

If you boot normally and run sudo parted --list again, post the output, does it show in that?

It is a bit clunky in the current version of foxclone, you have to click on edit network connections and set the password that way and connect again. Page 40 of the user guide:
Screenshot from 2022-01-25 17-58-57.png
In the next version of foxclone, yet to be released, it is simple, click on a wifi connection and it will prompt for the password.

So the drive shows up in parted when booting normally, but not when booting the foxclone iso and running parted?

Looking at your other posts, you are running with a 5.13 kernel, foxclone boots with a 5.4 kernel. That might be the problem, but why foxclone sees your other sata drives (assume on a usb connection as they show as portable) and not the Patriot, not sure.

Apart from the kernel, the only other things I can think of is move the Patriot onto a different sata port, there may be some incompatibility there that the later kernel fixes*. The other issue that the 5.13 kernel seems to fix is the sata mode. Have a look in BIOS and see if you can find a setting for sata mode, if it is set to RST then change it to AHCI. Some BIOS manufacturers make it very difficult to find this setting, you may have to set an admin password first.

Best guess at the moment - it is the sata mode.

Have PMed you.

* with an nvme drive in the system, on some mobos it masks one of the sata ports. But I think if this is happening you would have the same problem booting normally.

You were spot on Andy, drive was marked to be Optain Memory :?: Anyhow, changed it to AHCI and presto! Foxclone saw it :D . And although I am using kernel 5.13, Foxclone booted just fine, so kudos on your efforts on Foxclone.

To Mikeflan.....

Yeah, I looked again into gparted and noticed what you saw. Like a calculator or desk phone next to the drive description. Not sure what that is about?

You were lucky! Had a few posts lately from users who could not find the setting in BIOS to change it. Some manufacturers make it really difficult if not impossible to change.

RST/optane - an intel idea, have a small SSD buffering your main drive to make it faster.
