how do I stop at the grub menu? 20.3/MATE

I lost my password and I have a list of instructions on how to set a new one.
However, in my MATE version of 20.3, I never see a grub menu. The screen is blank, then the LM symbol within a green circle is displayed.
I figured out just by hitting keys that an ESC key would show detail behind the scenes during boot, but I don't get that chance when grub starts.

How do I halt at grub?
How do I get the screen to even show grub?
