Audio Issues realtek alc295

Post by greym_in »

Hey Everyone

First post, trying solve my no audio realtek alc295 problems with the useful hints and tips that I have found so far on this forum and beyond but with no such luck.

I am running Linux MInt 20.3 Cinnamon, with a dual partition with windows, audio is still working fine there. Trying to play through in built speakers on HP laptop.

This is my inxi -Fxz:

Hello greym_in,

have you tried the "No Sound Fix Tips" from MrEen on his website? http://mreen.epizy.com/SoundFixTips.html?i=1 Because you have a dual boot, you should begin with point 3.

Hey Hawr

Thanks for your speedy response and advice, I duly followed it, starting from point 3. At point 6 whilst doing sudo alsa force-reload my terminal was frozen whilst Loading ALSA sound driver modules:

Code: Select all

ross@ross-HP-PAVILION-X360-14-DH:~$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Only CTRL-C allowed me to get a responsive terminal again. I am not sure if this hang would then affect any of the steps in point 6 of the Sound Fix Tips guide. So I didn't complete all of the steps for point 6, but I did as you suggested, go through all of the parts in points 3-5.

If you have any other advice it would be greatly appreciated!

Too bad that none of the points could help. Are maybe questions about the usage of alsamixer or pavucontrol? Point 6 is only for the case, that your sound card isn't detected and you see only a dummy output. For the ALC295 sound chip I've found a fixups option, which can be set in the alsa-base configuration file. These fixups are described for HP Spectre x360, but your Pavilion x360 is very similar and both have the same sound chip.

Code: Select all

sudo -H xed /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
This opens the text editor xed with the configuration file. Please add at the end the following lines:
# HP Spectre X360 fixups
options snd-hda-intel model=alc295-hp-x360
Save & exit (ignore the warnings in the terminal) and reboot for testing.

If it doesn't help, please show the output of

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -C1 -E 'ALSA|HDA|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel'

I've spent a lot of time looking for an answer to this. I have realtek alc256 and have had trouble getting sound out of my headphone jack. However, running this command while running the audio you want to listen to may solve your problem,

sudo hda-verb /dev/snd/hwC0D0 0x1a 0x707 0x05

While I have not found or been able to figure out a permanent fix for this this command has helped. Good luck.

Hello greym_in,

the output looks okay. Do you have sound with headphones?

Hey HAWR, I hadn't checked previously with 3.5 mm headphones nor with bluetooth speakers. Both of these now work, but still no sound with the in-built speakers. I certainly can survive with these two options, but if you have any further suggestions for in-built speakers I am willing to follow them up. Thanks for your help! :D

Hey Jeff, I do now have sound via the headphone jack, I am unsure if I want to make any further changes to lose what I have. But I appreciate your suggestion! Thanks

Both of these now work,
That's good news. I've found a thread here in the forum, where MrEen suggested in the same situation and same laptop the blacklisting of a codec: viewtopic.php?p=1961855#p1961855

So let us try if this could help:

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf <<<'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek'
Run that in the terminal then shut down again. Wait at least 3 minutes, then power up and test again.

If it doesn't improve the situation, you can remove the file:

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf

Short summary for this HP Pavilion x360
  • Dual boot with Windows: Disable Fast Startup in Windows
  • Add an fixups option to alsa-base.conf for the ALC295 sound chip
  • Blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek codec
HI Hawr, sorry to report, and of course I have appreciated your help, but the /Blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek codec/ has only resulted in a temporary fix for the inbuilt speaker sound. I am back to just relying on Bluetooth or 3.5 jack for sound. Any other suggestions?

That's a little bit strange. Has something changed in between like Windows updates or sound related and kernel updates in LM? Have you installed sound related programs? Can you remember, what you have done right before the sound died again?

Please try point 2 of MrEen's tips again:

Reset PulseAudio's configuration files to default then restart the sound daemon:
  • Delete the files in /home/yourusername/.config/pulse
  • Type the following in the terminal: pulseaudio -k
  • Wait a few seconds, then test your sound
And please show again the output of

Code: Select all

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*

Hey HAWR

As far as I'm aware no major updates or anything major happened after losing the sound. Nothing else was changed or added/deleted, that I did- especially in regards to sound. How do I check for Kernel changes in LM?

I followed your most recent instruction, emptying the pulse dir and this was the output:

Code: Select all

Still nothing in regards to in-built speaker sound.

How do I check for Kernel changes in LM?
You can see it the Update Manager > View > Update History.

Then let's see, what happens, when we remove the blacklisting and reboot.

Code: Select all

sudo rm /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf

Hey Hawr,

I rm the blacklist as suggested and still the same issue, audio only works with bluetooth and 3.5.

I could only screenshot the update files, so I dont know if you want me to upload those, maybe about 9 screenshots if that would help?

I just recapitulate the step, which helped to get the sound working. Let's try to repeat it and see, if it works the second time.

Code: Select all

sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-realtek.conf <<<'blacklist snd_hda_codec_realtek'
Run that in the terminal then shut down again. Wait at least 3 minutes, then power up and test again.

It isn't necessary, because there couldn't be a kernel update. You began this thread with the latest 5.4 kernel.

Hey Hawr,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. The blacklist does work, but only for the one restart. Next again time logging in or restarting and it resets back to no in-built sound.

The delay is okay :) I'm thinking about, what changes beween the reboot after that sound is working and the next reboot, when it's gone again.

Does that mean that logging in and out is also enough to make the sound disappear?

Can you please do the following, one time after the reboot with working sound and one time after the following reboot without sound: Open the terminal and run

Code: Select all

alsa-info
which runs a script to get detailed sound informations. In the second pre-step your are asked to download a newer version, choose "no". After that you can decide to upload the informations or save it locally. Please take the upload, so that you can post the URL's here.
