Hi, I'm new and ran into a problem. I need to create a shortcut to the desktop for the executable file that lies further down the directory, help please.

Re: Desktop shortcut
use your File Manager, if in Cinnamon, it is NEMO.
go to the file that you want, or a Folder as I do.
Left click once on the file/folder and type Control-M which will create the Shortcut key.
Now right click the shortcut key and then place it on your Desktop.
here are my folders that I assigned shortcuts too, because I access them multiple times a day, some times several times an hour.

Re: Desktop shortcut
You can also just use a Keyboard Shortcut which I do to bring up Firefox when I want it.
for that I assigned Control-Alt-F
for that I assigned Control-Alt-F

Welcome to the forum.
Directly, right click on the Desktop, and click "Create Launcher here".
You can change the icon, by clicking on the "rocket"

Re: Desktop shortcut
I've tried this. It works to launch Terminal, but does not run the command.

Same here,
I will stick with the methods I mentioned
Re: Desktop shortcut
What is the command you are trying to run and where does it live?
Thinkcentre M720Q - LM21.3 cinnamon, 4 x T430 - LM21.3 cinnamon, Homebrew desktop i5-8400+GTX1080 Cinnamon 19.0
Re: Desktop shortcut
Also, which desktop are you using: Cinnamon, XFCE or Mate?
FWIW, I tested in Cinnamon creating a desktop launcher for xed (Mint's simple text editor) and that works.

Re: Desktop shortcut
It works in both Cinnamon, and MATE, don't know about XFCE.
Also FWIW in MATE you can simply drag a menu item to the desktop, this does not work in Cinnamon.
