Can't boot from a USB/Following Guide

Post by bookthief2468 »

I don't have any experience with Linux, and I'm following the guide from the official website on installing it. Here's the link: https://linuxmint-installation-guide.re ... /boot.html I skipped the part about verifying the ISO, just for clarification.

Right now I have Windows 11. I'm following the guide and I'm at the part about booting Linux Mint. I downloaded Etcher and made a bootable USB stick. Now I'm trying to boot Linux Mint from it. I inserted my USB into my laptop, restarted it, and nothing happens. It just loads Windows 11 like normal. I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'd be happy to add clarification if needed.

Edit: for everyone wondering I have a used Acer Aspire 5 A514-54-501Z.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Plug in the USB and restart the computer. Hit Delete and F1 repeatedly until you get into the bios. Then go into the boot menu and select the USB to boot to. Once LM starts up try it out. Surf the web. Play some videos. Etc. If all is working good then install LM alongside your windows if that is what you want to do.

Before you do any of that boot into windows and disable faststartup:

You need to 'direct' your pc to boot from the Mint USB drive rather than the Windows boot drive.

How you do that depends on your pc & the manufacturer.

The pc manual will tell you which Function key that you need to press on startup in order to enter the machine BIOS.
There you can set the USB as the first boot device & then your machine will do that.
'Normal' keys to access BIOS are F1, F2, F12, esc, del & some Levovo laptops even have a special button on the computer's side.
If you alter BIOS then the change will remain until you alter it again (not that it matters much as if a bootable USB drive is not present then the computer will automatically boot from the next bootable device).

Many manufacturer also allow the use of a function key at startup to go directly to a mini boot menu that allows you to start from a different drive than that normally specified under the BIOS.
This is often F10 , but again, depends on the computer manufacturer & the user manual (or Google search) will provide the correct key..
The selection made will apply to this boot only..

What brand and model laptop are we talking about? A link to the vendor or a seller would be even more helpful.
