Post by Bambola10 »

Hello,

Linux mint xfce 19.3 installed on laptop Dell inspiron N7110 CPU Model: intel (R) core (TM) -2670QM CPU: CPU core: 8: CPU Speed: 2.20GHz, after exiting sleep mode, the screen remains black, the keyboard does not work the mouse and the touchpad. The only thing that responds is the power button (on / off).

This doesn't seem to be a brand new installation. When did the problem start?

You might use a TimeShift snapshot to restore to a previous state.

Besides that: Pressing the power button is a source for additional problems. If this happens again do the following:
Press and hold Alt-Print whilst typing the letters S and U and B one after the other; make a little break between U and B. This should help to safely reboot the machine.

This problem is not only with Linux Mint 19.3. I have tried at least 10 other distributions and it is always so.
The key combination Alt + PrntScr + REISUB as well as Ctrl + Alt + F1-F6 do not work.
I can't restart the laptop in any way other than through the power button.

Your system is currently rendering with Nvidia. A number of people have run into issues resuming from sleep with Nvidia graphics.

The workaround mentioned in this post has worked for many people. If you need detailed instructions for editing the file then see this post and the subsequent ones in that topic.

What secret are you talking about? Don't worry. I'm not from KBG (I'm kidding) :D. I've already said that.
The problem exists in both new and old installations.
All the Linux distributions I've tried have the problem.
The problem is not an update.

Often times, that points to a hardware-related issue (either a setting or an actual physical issue).

Have you tried running your hardware in UEFI mode instead of using Legacy BIOS mode? On computers with UEFI, Nvidia is less likely to have issues if the computer is run how it was originally designed.

Machine:
Type: Portable System: Dell product: Dell System Inspiron N7110 v: N / A serial: <filter>
Chassis: type: 8 v: 0.1 serial: <filter>
Mobo: Dell Model: 09G8VY in: A00 Series: <filter> UEFI [Legacy]: Dell in: A06
date: 07/22/2011

Legacy BIOS mode in laptops tends to be an emulation of BIOS because there is no way to switch the firmware from UEFI to BIOS. They are two different things.

Oddly, when I checked to see if your system was running the latest UEFI version, I could not even find the one you are using so I may not have found the correct link.

I wrote my assumption, that this might not be a brand new installation out of 2 observations:
At first I wonder, why somebody installs in these days, less than 1 year before the support ends, a system with LM 19.3. If you would have the need for a 32 bit OS, than I could probably understand this, but you have a 64 bit system.
The second observation is the date for registering here, and this nearly half a year back. So I assumed, that you installed Mint in November or December and I did not believe, that somebody waits 6 months, before (s)he asks, where (s)he does not even need to register for it.
I apologize, that I draw the wrong conclusions.

You did not name the other 10 distributions. Was LM 20.3 in between?

The system does not support UEFI:-

Last year (November, December) I installed Linux Mint on another laptop (Toshiba), which now has MX Linux.
Now on this laptop (DELL) I also installed Linux Mint 20.3 xfce, but the problem is the same.
I'm thinking of trying Linux mint 20.3 cinnamon.

I do not believe, that 20.3 Cinnamon does it better than 20.3 xcfe. Perhaps the edge version helps. LMDE might be also worth to try.

Yes, it does. That is why UEFI shows up in your output.
Machine:
Type: Portable System: Dell product: Dell System Inspiron N7110 v: N / A serial: <filter>
Chassis: type: 8 v: 0.1 serial: <filter>
Mobo: Dell Model: 09G8VY in: A00 Series: <filter> UEFI [Legacy]: Dell in: A06
date: 07/22/2011

The usual three modes in inxi output are:
  • BIOS
  • UEFI
  • UEFI:[Legacy]
There is no way to get the last option on a computer with BIOS firmware.

You received that output because you have the setting in the UEFI set to Legacy BIOS mode instead of UEFI mode.

Change the setting in your firmware to UEFI instead of Legacy, then boot your computer to a live session of Mint with a usb/DVD, and check inxi output and you will see your computer has it.

Before I look at the BIOS, I want to share something else.
In my first post I did not say that a black screen was obtained when restarting the system (laptop).
Today something strange happened. I used the laptop for a long time, about 2 hours. Before closing the lid I did a restart and there was no black screen. The laptop restarted normally.
I closed the lid, after a while I opened it and there was no black screen. I tried this several times and there was always no black screen. The system works normally.
I haven't stopped it and still (without restarting again) when closing / opening the lid, the system continues to work normally.
Do you have any guess (explanation), what could be the reason for this strange behavior of the system (laptop)?
Maybe a hardware reason?

Are you asking us to explain why the laptop is working as it should work? That's what that question sounds like you are asking.

Without knowing what exactly was causing the original problem, and not knowing if you updated anything when you rebooted, it's not really possible to know what may have happened.
