Headphones work, but speakers do not

Post by keesvankooten »

Hi all,

I recently installed Mint and I really like it, but somehow my speakers don't work (while my headphones do work). In my dual-boot Windows everything works fine. Do you have any idea what the problem might be? Or what I can do to find out what the problem is? Could it be a driver problem?

Others (viewtopic.php?t=343433) seem to have similar problems, but their solutions do not work for my HP pavilion (14-dh1807nd).

Thank you!

Do you see your speakers in "Sound" settings screen in the output tab? What happens if you select a different output and then re-select your speakers?

Did you try installing pavucontrol and seeing if that changes anything?

I have installed pavucontrol. I have also re-selected my speakers but still no sound.
And then... I closed my laptop and two hours later I opened it and now I have sound from my speakers. I am clueless why this makes a change. To be sure I rebooted and the same thing happened: First I have no sound, but after letting the computer sleep I get sound from my speakers. Even when I plug in my headphones the sound comes only from my speakers, so the problem is reversed now. How can I change it, so my headphones work as well?

Update: I checked my headphones and they also don't work before sleep (and after reboot). I think I reverted all changes I have made so I don't understand that either. The sound settings do recognize whether I plug in my headphone or unplug it, but the speakers will continue to produce the sound.

I have disabled fast boot and later secure boot, but the problem persists. What else can I try?

In terminal copy & paste the following command and post the results back here in between the code display brackets </>

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxz
If you are using Cinnamon, then click on the sound icon on the taskbar, go to Sound Settings and select the Line Out icon it will enable the speakers only and not the headset, if that is what you want.

Yes, I am using cinnamon and I want to be able to switch between headphones and speaker. In sound settings I don't think I see a line out icon. At least I am not aware of it. After replugging my headphones I suddenly got sound from my headphones. I am not sure why, because before replugging it recognized my headphones already.

Code: Select all

Here is the output from: inxi -Fxz
