Hi,
I just have a question about cleaning up memory or something like that to speed up or more specifically "refresh" linux mint like in windows.
What are some methods for doing that?
(by the way I wouldn't mind reading from intermediate or advanced resources to improve my learning )
Thank you.
Is there a "clean registry" method to speed OS up like windows?

Hello HuginnMuninn
I agree with wally, Linux is not Windows.
It will take you some time to let go of "Windows thinking", just be patient.
What's really important is that, during this time period, don't do anything stupid to break your system. Trying to apply your Windows habits (like using antivirus, or "cleaner apps" such as CCleaner, BleachBit, etc.) will often break your Linux.
Here is how you clean Mint safely:

Here is how you speed up your Mint safely:

Follow these step by step, and don't try anything else.

Re: Is there a "clean registry" method to speed OS up like windows?
There is no registry, which could be cleaned. There is also nothing to refresh. The speed is solely dependent from the hardware (obvious) and from your usage. E.g. If you open many programs at the same time the system might start to swap memory to disk; this depends from the physical amount of RAM. As soon as swap get used the system gets slower, because a disk is slower than RAM.HuginnMuninn wrote: ⤴Sat Jun 25, 2022 9:16 am question about cleaning up memory or something like that to speed up or more specifically "refresh" linux mint like in windows.
As already said: Linux is not Windows. Both are os's, but they are very different. The one has much more marketing, the other works superior.

this Linux System doesn't really need the Regular Maintenance,
that you would be so used to, on that Windows system.
the closest to what you are thinking .. would be this:
https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.c ... -mint.html
since you are after some "advanced thinking" .. then do read the rest of that website, too.

Re: Is there a "clean registry" method to speed OS up like windows?
The only thing that I know of that you can do that's anything like a routine "cleaning" is to run a TRIM on your SSDs.
You would generally do so with the following command:
-a = all
-v = verbose (tells you what its done)
Running with all is safe even if you have those old-fangled spinning disk hard drives that I've heard about, as it will just omit them. It will only trim devices that can trim, which would be your SSDs.

Code: Select all
sudo fstrim -av

Re: Is there a "clean registry" method to speed OS up like windows?
That's a specific thing. If you mean that, there's no direct analog in Mint. OTOH, one isn't needed either.
What can be done which is similar is to set up a home or data partition. Then if you want to "refresh", e.g., you've installed and uninstalled so many apps you're not sure what's what, you would reinstall the operating system, remount the home/data partition, and reinstall your apps. The first two steps, the ones equivalent to Refresh, take less than ten minutes. The third is needed in Windows also, and faster in Linux.
Something similar can be done without a home/data partition, but then you would have to copy in the data files from backup.
