Newbie, New Mate Install 20.3 Login Loop? (SOLVED)
I'm new to Linux and Mint. I somehow have a black logo screen, a box requesting my password, and I am not getting anywhere.
Have I made an error on install? I try password, but it takes me right back. ( invalid password) tried the rm .ICEAuthority and .Xauthority, says no such file or directory.
Help please.

Does this happen on the very first start of the newly installed system? In this case removing the named files would be senseless or even impossible. Otherwise you might try to remove the file ~/.dmrc
Re: Newbie, New Mate Install 20.3 Login Loop?
Hello,
I reinstalled, this time I ignored the kernel 5.4.0-121.137, it wanted to upgrade Cinnamon Desktop???, I am using MATE, I did not upgrade Firmware as suggested, and I did not use Local Mirrors, I stayed with US and UK default servers.
I am restarting, and trying to see if I get past that loop. Also, I get the error when starting, XID 461 unknown chip? there is more to that, but it is too fast to see it all.
I did try an install of Cinnamon to try it out, but I like MATE better.

Why don't you answer the question and report about the result of the given advice (if you have applied it at all).
You can of course do what you want, but in this case we do not need a threat about it. And writing, that anybody suggested to upgrade the firmware is simply perceptual disorder.

Yes, it was a new install, and updating ALL the required updates.
Re: Newbie, New Mate Install 20.3 Login Loop?
There's a heading in the Official Release Notes called "Solving Freezes", and it gives instruction related to black screen.
If you chose "encrypt" during the install then you will be prompted first with an extra password prompt initially, before you even get into booting the system and get to the system login screen, they would assumably be 2 different passwords. If you chose another language than english during installation, then you have to be careful about what kind of password you create because if you create a language specific password with weird marks or something odd or Fkey variations then it will be a problem to get those keycodes entered to the password box.

Hello! Di ya all miss this? It wanted update Cinnamon Desktop? I am using Mate! I am trying to avoid another BSLoop, I am thinking/wondering if the update attempt of Cinnamon Desktop caused this issue? Or was it the Kernel, or the firmware??FUBAR wrote: ⤴Mon Jun 27, 2022 4:07 pm Hello,

Re: Newbie, New Mate Install 20.3 Login Loop?
Glad you got it sorted, but something is odd. Here's what I get when running that command on a Mate 20.1 virtual machine:
Don't do anything to fix this now, but bear it in mind if the problem recurs.
Code: Select all
pbear@mate-20-1:~$ apt list --installed *cinnamon*
