[ALTERNATE SOLUTION] Not waking up from suspend sometimes

Post by Binarix128 »

I've noticed that sometimes my laptop doesn't want to turn on from suspend, after the login screen I get a black screen, and I have to press ctr+alt+del to get back to the login screen and reboot, or plug and unplug an HDMI screen. I've also noticed that the login screen shows the default LM wallpaper when the screen is going
to be black, normally it shows my wallpaper. The same thing happens both with the Nvidia 470 driver and the new 510 one.

I couldn't determine which apps cause my laptop to not return from suspend, but apparently it happens when I leave my laptop in sleep mode for longer than 30 mins. The Xfce screen power manager has given me some problems with the suspend. Could migrating to Cinnamon solve the problem?

Unluckily returning from suspend mode is on some hardware not reliable. In your case you have at least the advantage, that you are still able to do a clean reboot. Better to waive in this case, before you loose data.

please open your own topic about your suspend issue, it won't be the same cause necessarily as you both have different desktop environments, different builds of Mint and no doubt completely different hardware too.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

The data you posted indicates the graphics drivers are not loading correctly. There are often problems related to suspend when they are not loaded properly.

Graphics: Device-1: Intel vendor: Lenovo driver: i915 v: kernel bus ID: 00:02.0
chip ID: 8086:5906
Device-2: NVIDIA GM108M [GeForce MX110] vendor: Lenovo driver: nvidia v: 510.73.05
bus ID: 01:00.0 chip ID: 10de:174e
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: modesetting,nvidia
unloaded: fbdev,nouveau,vesa resolution: 1366x768~60Hz
OpenGL: renderer: N/A v: N/A direct render: N/A

X Server runs the graphics in Linux Mint. Please use this command in a terminal to upload the X Server log file to termbin:

Code: Select all

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | nc termbin.com 9999
It will return with a url address that you can post in your next reply.

I went back and checked and it appears this is not the first time you have run into suspend issues. Just marking the other topic here so we have it handy [Solved] Problems when suspending my laptop.

I think it didn't load because I wanted to test out the 470 driver again but I didn't restart the computer when I posted it. The problem still persisted.

Here's what the command returned.

The 510 driver stays loaded until you reboot the computer so the fact you wanted to test the 470 driver again should not make a difference as to whether the renderer loads.
Binarix128 wrote: Fri Jul 01, 2022 8:45 pmThe problem still persisted.

Here's what the command returned.
That command was to investigate why the renderer did not load. It was not to investigate the computer not waking from suspend. You now have the renderer loaded, so we would need to check elsewhere for what might be happening.

I went back and read through your original topic. It seemed some of the problems were related to issues with the Xfce desktop, but when you used the Nvidia-470 driver you indicated the issue was resolved. If that driver is no longer resolving the issue, then maybe there is something in your Xfce install which is causing a problem. The way you described it in the first post, it does seem rather random as to whether or not it happens.

Unless you are able to determine a repeatable pattern as to what causes it, I'm not sure what else to check beyond what we already checked in the other topic. If Xfce is the issue, then moving to Cinnamon would help, but we don't know for sure Xfce is the issue. It's up to you whether you want to try switching.

I just moved to Cinnamon and suspend seems to work flawlessly so far. But Cinnamon is a bit heavy for me so I will try out the MATE edition. So we can mark the problem as solved.

Seems like Xfce doesn't play good with Nvidia graphics, because run Mint Xfce in some older laptops with Intel graphics and they work just fine. Xfce hardly gets any updates from the devs probably it will be a long time until the bug gets fixed.

I use Cinnamon with all the Effects turned off which makes it lighter so that might be another option to consider. (Go to the Effects app and move all the sliders to the left.)

To mark the situation resolved, please go to your first post in this topic, click the pencil icon, and add [ALTERNATE SOLUTION] to the beginning of the title so others know you are no longer seeking help on this issue.
