Black and frozen desktop

Post by ECaue »

I'm facing a strange issue with my Linux Mint Tricia. I'm having the same issue as described in this post:

Recently I installed Python 3.7 on my machine in order to use a software. Everything went fine but the next time I turned on my notebook something happened: my desktop image appeared for just a couple of seconds, and after this the screen went all black. The icons of my my desktop are still there but everything is frozen(touchpad and keyboard), and I'm not able to open the terminal.

I tried to use a bootable SanDisk to install Linux Mint from zero but after the boot I'm not able to click on the installation icon(since everything is frozen).

I was able to open the recovery mode and I tried to install a new kernel using the terminal (of the recovery mode), as suggested in that link, but received this error message:

Code: Select all

root@TARDIS:~# apt install linux-oem-20.04

Welcome to the forum, ECaue.

You are running Linux Mint 19.3 so you can not use the directions from the other topic because they are for Linux Mint 20 versions only.

Linux Mint uses Python to work properly and it sounds like you may have made changes which changed the version of python which was set as the default for the computer.

After installing Linux Mint 19.3, the first thing one should do is upgrade the kernel to one which is supported as well as run all the other updates. However, somehow, your system is not running the correct version of Cinnamon for LM19.3. Re-installing is probably the best idea.

Your graphics info indicates your system only has Intel graphics, but your system information indicates there is an AMD GPU. Check in the BIOS/UEFI to see what is set for the graphics. See if it is set for Switchable/Hybrid or Discrete or some other setting.

Is there a specific reason you installed LM19.3?

I suggest making an install usb of Linux Mint 20.3 "Una" - Cinnamon (Edge) ISO and trying again.

One would think that would be fine, but apparently not. Consider using Timeshift to get back to normal.

Actually, there is no reason. This bootable USB is quite old, and I think by the time I made it, the 19.3 version was just released.

For some reason I was able to enter a live session of LM19.3 and everything is running well.

I tried to use Timeshift via the command:

Code: Select all

sudo timeshift -- restore
but got the message:

Code: Select all

E: No snapshots found on device: '/dev/nvme0n1p
I was able to access my files trough the live session, they are hidden in the path

Code: Select all

/media/root/ba07e1a6-db5d-4e9a-9c4d-6674457a33c7/home/ecaue
wich I called big_path, but no matter how I try I'm not able to transfer the files to other machine using:

Code: Select all

scp big_path/ecaue@ip_of_my_broken_machine:path_to_a_test_file/teste_file.pdf user_in_remote_machine@remote_machine_ip:path_in_remote_machine
The command line keeps waiting eternally. I'm not even able to access my machine remotely using SSH.

What does this mean that your files are hidden in the path?

If you did not have Timeshift running, then there would be no snapshots. If you manually made snapshots and saved them to a separate drive, that drive would need to be attached when running Timeshift in order to access the snapshots.

Boot to a live session of Linux Mint and open the Timeshift application on the live session. Click Restore and see if the application can find snapshots. Normally, one does not have to manually tell it where to look, but maybe that will be necessary in your situation.
