Bios update caused video to malfunction (Solved by Kernel 5.15.0-43)
Hi all,
I changed out my motherboard, ASUS and updated the bios from 1007 to 1407 I believe (Intel security issue).
Now my Radeon RX 6500 XT won't display in higher resolution above 1024 x 768, and LG monitor is not recognized.
I have been in contact with MSI the video card manufacturer and I am going to reach out to ASUS also.
Did I need to update bios at all? Does this Intel security issue affect Linux users?
Would appreciate your thoughts on this if any.

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction
This sounds like your system does not have the necessary graphics drivers loaded. AMD graphics are in the kernel, so please provide your system info.

I see I have Kernel 5.4.0-122, I will try to update the kernel to 5.15.0-43?

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction
Well well well....it was the Kernel. I installed 5.15.0-43 and presto it displays properly, recognizes my monitor too.
Thanks for the tips...I never thought of the Kernel needing a change.

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction
The RX 6500 needs at least the 5.14 kernel to get the necessary graphics drivers.
Graphics:
Device-1: AMD vendor: Micro-Star MSI driver: N/A bus ID: 03:00.0 chip ID: 1002:743f
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: ati,fbdev unloaded: modesetting,radeon,vesa

direct render: Yes
Also, your system does not indicate the BIOS/UEFI updated. It is still showing version 1007.

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction (Solved by Kernel 5.15.0-43)
Hi SMG,
Yes, the bios is 1007 as I reverted back to the original bios that was shipped with the board after trying the later versions thinking that the newer bios was responsible for the video problem I was having.

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction (Solved by Kernel 5.15.0-43)
Okay. I thought maybe the update did not work properly.
Now you know the BIOS version was not the issue, I would recommend updating it. ASUS usually does not make updates available unless they have fixed something known to be a problem. (They do not necessarily say what the problem is, but updating has fixed quite a few problems people have had on this forum.)

Hi, Yes I am back to the latest bios.
Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction (Solved by Kernel 5.15.0-43)
I am not sure what to think about this. After the bios update...the boot time was long. I caught a flash on the screen, and I couldn't catch it before it left the screen, it mention AMD, so I figured it was referring to video card.
I borrowed a friend's Nvidia card. Boot time was shorter, and display came up to resolution I wanted, with out the latest kernel or recommended driver. Hmmm.

Re: Bios update caused video to malfunction (Solved by Kernel 5.15.0-43)
Without seeing your data, we do not know what that might mean.
There is an open-source Nvidia driver included in the kernel which means one should not need the "recommended" driver for Nvidia because the open-source driver automatically installs.
Additionally, your system should be automatically booting to the latest kernel series (5.15) so I do not understand your comment about not using the latest kernel.
