Hi everyone, I tried loading a game and got error "ERR_GFX_D3D_INIT" so then i opened driver manager and changed my nvidia driver from recommended 4.70 to 5.10. Now the game loads but then freezes after about 2minutes. I have then tried to download the driver from the nvidia website but it's a .run file and i'm struggling to install it. I've tried various commands but one that seemed to get somewhere was "sh filename.run" but then it stops. It always says run from root but i thought running from the terminal was running from root?
I'm using nvidia GTX 1660 4gb, i've tried 4.70 , 5.10 , 5.15 through driver manager that's why i ended up trying the .run file. Any help would be appreciated.

Moved from windows to linux and enjoying every minute of linux. It's a learning curve but well worth it.

Re: Graphics error D3D - have tried different version
to run as root, use
which game and can you not edit wine configuration to force the windows native version of the required D3D? I have to do that for some older games that want d3d10 native.
sudo ./filename.run
but it's not worth the pain.which game and can you not edit wine configuration to force the windows native version of the required D3D? I have to do that for some older games that want d3d10 native.
I’ll tell you a DNS joke but be advised, it could take up to 24 hours for everyone to get it.

Take a deep breath, Blankman.
GTAV was absolutely playable until very recently on all nvidia drivers you have tested so far.
It seems there has been a recent update that broke some things but nothing serious.
Protondb is your friend when it comes to Steam Proton.
"Play" with different versions of Proton and not with different versions of Nvidia drivers as a general rule.
I insist you stick with latest Nvidia driver for now. Even on Windows constant installing / uninstalling / re-installing of Nvidia drivers is not advisable.
Don't install the installer from Nvidia. Use only the packages of your distro.
ProtonUp-Qt will make installing the special unofficial Proton-GE builds a piece of cake.

Re: Graphics error D3D - have tried different version
The methods of installing the Nvidia driver are not interchangeable. If you have a driver installed from Driver Manager and then try to install the driver from the website, you could end up with problems because they do not install the same way and you can end up with a mix of both.Blankman wrote: ⤴Tue Aug 09, 2022 1:42 amI have then tried to download the driver from the nvidia website but it's a .run file and i'm struggling to install it. As already mentioned, game problems are often related to the Proton version or the game version and not Nvidia driver versions.
