LightDM doesn't work

Post by bigrand »

I tried to install this https://github.com/manilarome/lightdm-w ... e-glorious but it didn't go well. So, now LightDM doesn't work.

I ran

Code: Select all

lightdm --test-mode --debug
and this is what I got:

Code: Select all

That was your decision.
What is the version of Mint and the desktop?

I'm not sure what state your computer is in at the moment, I assume you have a fully functional terminal screen?
Did you install lightdm-webkit2-greeter as the installation instructions advised?

Part of the installation instructions is to change Lightdm to use that instead of whatever it is using before (GTK I think).

I would have been more surprised if it did work. That project has not seen any activity since 2020, and most of the responses in the Issues section seem to be from other users.

I still have the live USB which I used to install Linux Mint XFCE if that's what you mean. I can use my PC fine, but LightDM doesn't work.

My system is fully operational (autologin is enabled), but it would be nice to be able to use LightDM.
I followed this tutorial for Arch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3siZNJN3ec I tried a few things, but they rendered LightDM useless, so I tried this (method #3): https://www.linuxslaves.com/2016/05/3-w ... op.htmlbut it still produced an error (black screen). So I looked up how to properly install it and came across this: https://askubuntu.com/a/1201706 which had no effect.

It's supposed to work. There's several posts on r/unixporn, but yeah, I should have researched before trying to use it.

If you are able to do, revert to the original window manager, as long as this is doable.

bigrand .that isn't what Mikeflan meant

A system or disk image is a snapshot of the entirety of the disk or system ( which can contain multiple partitions as well as multiple physical storage drives).

Versus what Timeshift is designed to do..which is just a snaptshot of only what is required to ensure your system boots up to whatever distro+ desktop correctly

That's one form of sensible backup more should consider making a habit of using once a month in addition to just copy and pasting all of your media files ( documents, pics, music, videos/movies, saved game data files/folders, screenshots of how some programs 's settings are set up..etc)

Thus...For a pretty well ensured backed up machine...

Timeshift snapshot backup once weekly or at least twice monthly+ once monthly system image backup+ into separate storage drives vs where your Linux distro and desktop live +at least 5 or 6 times a year physical manual backup ( copying and pasting your media files into a separate storage drive = I.T. department will highly respect you. ;)

Because I am dual booting Windows 10, I simply copied all of my files to my Windows partition and reinstalled Linux Mint. Thank you all anyways.
