No sound?

Post by Information Overload »

Everything was fine until yesterday. Now I get almost no sound. Below is the information from my system. I use a USB headset. I've tried it in the other USBs and still almost no sound. From some other posts, I've done the Alsamix check. I turned off 'Automute' and put everything up to 100. But nothing has changed. I'm a Linux newbie.

Re: No sound?

Post by Information Overload »

I ran through the suggestions here: http://mreen.epizy.com/SoundFixTips.html?i=2
I had my headphones on. YouTube playing in background
And these are my results:

Code: Select all

red@red-OptiPlex-990:~$ aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono

BUFFER_TIME: 500000
BUFFER_SIZE: 24000

As instructed, I deleted the Pulseaudio config files.

Code: Select all

red@red-OptiPlex-990:~$ pulseaudio -k

Ran

Code: Select all

sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
to see if anything blocking it but got nothing.

As the system seems to be saying there is only dummy output (as per number 6 of the tips above) I ran
apt install --reinstall pulseaudio

Code: Select all

red@red-OptiPlex-990:~$ apt install --reinstall pulseaudio

I've restarted the computer a few times and still no audio. I had audio a few days ago, and now I don't. I have done some updates as they came through. Including a kernel if I recall correctly. I hope the above information is useful.

Re: No sound?

Post by terry_dwyer »

I had similar problems after trying to install and use the Jack utilities. I tried everything I could think of including the things you have done.

As a last resort, I restored my machine using timeshift. Rebooted and everything was back as it should be. It sounds like you've only had this problem for a couple of days, so using a snapshot from timeshift that preceeds your problems is a quick fix for your problem. I had spent about a week, on and off researching and trying different things I found with zero success. I learnt my lesson. be careful what you do that may affect your sound system. These days, if I see anything that wants to update anything todo with sound, pulse or alsa, I do a timeshift snapshot first.

I hope you do use timeshift...

I tried the Timeshift thing. I could only go back to the 9th. Which I did. But there was still no sound. So I have now restored to the current software. But still no sound.

There is a pipewire installation on your system. Maybe there is a problem with that.

Ooh, that worked sort of. I removed pipewire and I do have some sound now. Just can't get it to go louder. I have it at 100% and it is a bit soft. But hearable. Unlike before. So just need more volume. I have the 150% sound applet. But needs more.
