Linux mint running without video acceleration

Post by Noob_coder »

Hello all, I've been using Linux Mint 20.3 XFCE for 2 months now and this is the first time I am getting this issue. Whenever I boot-up my laptop, I get this notification saying something like "Running without video acceleration". I have searched for this issue on this forum and have gone through some discussion threads but nothing helped. I am not able to adjust my brightness, videos run at about 10 to 20 fps and battery dies faster too.

I am not running with nomodeset enabled and have the latest kernel installed (5.15.0-46). Everything seems to be up-to-date yet I am facing this problem. Attaching the output of

inxi -Fxxxzz
as It may be helpful.

The data you posted indicates you are running Linux Mint 20.3 Cinnamon. Xfce does not check for video acceleration. Only Cinnamon checks for it.

Your system does not have any graphics drivers loaded which is why you are getting that message.

Graphics:
Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Picasso vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 03:00.0
chip ID: 1002:15d8
Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.13 driver: ati,fbdev unloaded: modesetting,radeon,vesa
resolution: 1920x1080~77Hz
OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 12.0.0 256 bits) v: 4.5 Mesa 21.2.6 compat-v: 3.1 direct render: Yes

Also your system has integrated graphics so these repos you added do not apply to your hardware.

Code: Select all

No active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu-proprietary.list
           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/amdgpu.list
           1: deb https://repo.radeon.com/amdgpu/22.20/ubuntu focal main
           Active apt repos in: /etc/apt/sources.list.d/rocm.list
           1: deb [arch=amd64] https://repo.radeon.com/rocm/apt/5.2 ubuntu main
Do you have a Timeshift snapshot of when your system was working to which you can revert?

Hello @SMG, thanks for replying. Yes I am using the XFCE edition but it never ran into such an issue earlier.
Your system does not have any graphics drivers loaded which is why you are getting that message.
The drivers were there, they just magically disappeared today when I restarted my PC. And I don't have a Timeshift snapshot.

Try rebooting the computer and see if they load this time.

Sorry. What I meant was that I installed the XFCE edition but later addded the Cinnamon DE (which I am currently running).

Already did that multiple times. Still no result :(

How did you add it? Is that when the problem started?

Can you remember any changes being made between when it was working and when the problem started?

Nope It ran fine for ~20 days until now when this problem started happening.

I just updated the system via the following command:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade && sudo apt autoremove
and then rebooted.

That is not really the recommended way to update the system, especially if you do not have any system backups (Timeshift snapshots). I have no idea of what that might have changed. Do you recall seeing any warnings or errors in the output?

What is the output of

Code: Select all

journalctl -b | grep -i "drm\|amdgpu\|03:00.0"
Maybe there will be some error messages which give us a clue as to what might have happened.

That is unusual. I'm not sure where the problem is occurring. Did you try booting with an older kernel? If you need directions on doing that, let us know.

Boot to a live session of Linux Mint with your install usb/dvd and check the output of inxi -Gx to see if the driver is loaded.
