With your windows drive plugged in, boot mint, open a terminal and sudo update-grub. Does it find win, if so you should get a grub menu next time you boot giving you the choice of mint or win.

Well that's the easy 'fix' failed!

In mint post the output of sudo parted --list with the win drive plugged in. This tells us about your drives and partitions. See this on how to post terminal output in a post - makes it easier to read.
viewtopic.php?f=42&t=364929&p=2119362&h ... l#p2119362

Want to check if win is booting in legacy mode (is this win7 or win10?). Partition layout is not conclusive, but a starter. The other thing you could do is go into BIOS and change boot mode from UEFI to legacy, put your win drive top of the BIOS boot list and see if it boots. If that fails, reset boot mode to UEFI.

Tried the above no change.

SAMSUNG SP4002H = win7 32 bit - (40G)
Maxtor 4D040H2 = DATA - (40G)

I think the answer is to re-install mint in legacy mode. The output from efibootmgr shows you are booting mint in UEFI mode. Not sure how you managed to boot your install stick in UEFI mode (mint installs in the same mode that your install stick boots in) but will no longer boot from a stick. I would not be surprised if a PC that old does not support UEFI boot from either a stick or CD/DVD.

Go into BIOS change the boot mode from UEFI to legacy (there may be a setting for CSM as well = compatability support mode, if so enable that as well). See if your install stick boots and check how it boots with efibootmgr. If it boots in legacy mode do an 'erase and install' of your current mint (this will overwrite any data you have, anything important - back it up first). From the partitioning on your win drive, win7 is booting in legacy mode.

Given the age of your hardware you might find you have a smoother experience with LM20.3 or even LM19.3. Both have older kernels.

I would love to be able to do a clean install of Linux or windows but no boot from cd/dvd or usb pen only from this Linux drive no matter what drive i put in.
I install Linux just to test how fast it would run but now I think I have stuffed up this system.
i set the Bios to legacy (no CSM any where in the BIOS) just still boots into LINUX no changes ,,,, I have even disconnected all drives put a empty drive in set to boot form cd which shows in BIOS but still wont boot from cd.

if only I could find away to boot from a cd/dvd or usb pen

Just a note of how I original installed LINUX MINT
No windows drive (Disconnected)
Just empty 80G drive which I installed LINUX and a 40G drive which has only some data ... booted from live LINUX MINT DVD and installed
I can read DVD USB PENS but cant boot from the now

So are you saying, changing the boot order and legacy/efi, in bios has no effect?
If so I'd think about updating bios.

How do you update the BIOS if you cant boot from a CD/DVD or USB pen ... only this hard drive with LINUX boots.

I have had a similar situation in the past few days. I put Mint onto an old Toshiba Satellite laptop, whilst keeping Windows as a backup for the owner. I booted in UEFI mode, got into the boot menu and was able to select the USB stick, no problem. After the install I realized that I had used Cinnamon rather than the XFCE I had meant to. "No problem", I thought, "I'll just redo the installation".

Only this time, despite frantic bashing of F12, I never got the "BIOS boot menu thing" and it went straight to GRUB. Much head scratching and research later, I went into the BIOS and switched to 'legacy' mode and this time I got the boot menu and selected the USB but was incredibly slow.

Finally, I switched back to UEFI mode and tried a different USB stick, freshly written with the Live ISO. This time it worked!

I've no real explanation here. I don't know enough about the underlying mechanism and was just glad to get it working again.

I'm at a lost here I've tried every thing with the BIOS
clean it out. removed the battery over night just to be sure lol
reset the BIOS
removed all drives except the windows 7 wont boot it just displays in the top left corner "Succeeded - Ubuntu" and "E7" in bottom right (have no idea what the E7 is for)
every drive DVD or USB pen shows up in BIOS (all drives etc can be read in LINUX) and can be set to boot first but only the LINUX drive boots no matter if it is set as legacy or UEFI makes no difference to the LINUX boot but nothing else will boot
Tried several know good boot USB PENS and DVD that work in a 32 bit windows 10 (no UEFI BIOS) and a 64 bit windows 11 machines (with UEFI BIOS).

any help would be much appreciated.

SUCCESS ... I'm running this system with win7
First I would like to thank all those who tried to help even unsuccessful it gave me things to think about and was much appreciated.

I was about to trash this box or the mobo anyway lol
but I kept thinking it has to be the BIOS and how can I get to it to flash it.
NO boot usb pen or CD and I cant do it from in Linux
so thinking out of the box I thought I would try something, thinking it probably wont work anyway but had to give it a try.
I removed all drives
CLONED my windows 10 (32bit) and put only that drive in ... for some reason it found it and started to boot took ages as it had to change drivers for this box
any way while it was up and running I had a Windows Intel BIOS flash program I downloaded the other day with a BIOS file ... flashed it from with in windows successful. Rebooted back into windows 10 took awhile did a full scan of the hard drive GREAT works fine.
so tried a boot CD .... SUCCESS
Then tried a boot usb pen .... SUCCESS
All boot up reasonable fast now after the first slow boot
Removed the Win 10 drive and put back the old win7 and all is good.

I think this is one of the early BIOS that had the UEFI and legacy options and that might be the problem so I'm not going to use it with LINUX for now lol

Thanks again to all who tried to help.
