"Unmounting Disk" message

Post by brickchomper »

Here's the stupid question of the day: I unmounted a removable drive from Nemo and now there's a message in the top right of my screen saying "Unmounting Disk" with a description under it saying "Disconnecting from filesystem", and it doesn't go away. On Nemo, the drive is not mounted anymore. The gerund suggests it's still in the process of doing this? I just want to know if it's stuck unmounting the disk or if it's done.

Edit: just as I posted this thread, the message disappeared. Still want to know, though, because it took quite a while.

The answer depends on what Mint you have installed. I'll give you the LM 21 answer for now:
Don't pull the USB cable out until is says "It is safe to remove the drive", or something like that.
It is also a good idea to type sync in a terminal and have the terminal return to the prompt before unmounting.

Linux Mint Cinnamon 21. It's an internal hard drive that I mount when I need to access it and dismount when I'm done.

Well, in this it is hardly possible to draw a cable.

Did this happen only once or does it happen every day?

When this happened, I was dismounting after having copied a bunch of files to my OS drive. The copying was successful, no problem there.
Now I just tried mounting and dismounting the 2 internal secondary hard drives I have and the message didn't appear for either. I guess it was nothing?
