Setting a Startup Sound in Mint 20.3 (MATE) [SOLVED]

Post by williebthe3rd »

Hello, Forum! I've been using Mint for about 4 years, and I'm getting better... but some things truly make me feel like a noob. ;) For some reason, I'm just NOT QUITE getting the proper syntax to have Mint play a startup sound (a short WAV file). If I navigate to the folder of the file in Terminal, and use the command,

Code: Select all

PAPLAY startup.wav
it works.
But... I can't get it to work automatically when I create it in the Startup Apps box. Attached is a screenshot, showing what I've done... and failed.
Screenshot of my Noob attempt at a startup sound

I'm sure when someone shows me what I'm doing wrong, I'll smack myself upside the head with a V-8. ;)

Inside the command box is the following:

Code: Select all

/home/willie/sounds/startup.wav
In case it is needed, here is the "inxi -Fxxxrz" info from Terminal:

Code: Select all

willie@WPHA-QUAD:~$ inxi -Fxxxrz

Hi Willie.
Try this

Code: Select all

paplay /home/willie/sounds/startup.wav
Does it work?

Uh-oh! A new problem! :o I now have *TWO* speaker icons down in the lower right corner!

Ok, wait... I just re-started, again... and now I have ONE. :|

It is nice to hear that familiar startup sound, again!!

Not sure.
I found this:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Libcanberra

I fiddled a bit on Mint MATE and libcanberra is installed by default along all the sounds, you can find them in /usr/share/sounds/freedesktop/stereo
According to another source, you can make an .ogg file named system-shutdown.oga and put it in that directory, but i could not find a way to make work enabling the services for it, Mint tells you it is not installed.
Follow this:
https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/tutoria ... boot/11583

Research a bit more, maybe you can make it work.
timeshift your system first just in case

 That looks a little above my pay grade. ;) For now, I'm happy to hear that old familiar startup sound. Setting a shutdown sound shouldn't require such deep tinkering. :?
