Newly opened programs do not open in foreground (of the desktop), how do I set them to pop up like usual?

Post by ReaderGuy42 »

When I open a new program, or a program launches another one, the panel icon blinks, telling me it's open, but it doesn't appear automatically.

E.g. when I hit a link e.g. `mailto:test@mail.com`then my email program does launch, I can see the blinking icon in the panel, but it doesn't come onto screen automatically.

Or if I open a file, e.g. a LibreOffice document, then I see the blinking icon, but nothing else happens.

How do I bring newly opened programs into the foreground automatically? (I'm on Cinnamon, Mint 21)

There may be a setting in the window manager that is wrongly set.
I don't use cinnamon so I don't know which WM it uses but have a search for Window Focus

This is what I see in my "Windows" settings. The option to focus on new windows appears to only be for terminal launched programs.

Any other ideas? Thanks!

Hi, I just found this thread and it sounds just like what I have seen recently:

viewtopic.php?f=47&t=389171

ReaderGuy42-- did you ever find a way around this?

I was on Mint 20.3 but just upgraded to 21 and still see the problem. It seems like a bug, as it never used to be like this.

I have not been able to solve this. It still occurs, but not with all programs, making it harder to solve. Let me know if you find anything, please :)

I created a work-around for this with the qpdfview trouble I've been seeing, and it should be adaptable to the program(s) you're having trouble with.

See the other thread link in my last post.
