Re: Printer not working
Having looked at the posts for which I thank everyone. I tried to get the printer icon back by installing system-config-printer. That brought the printer icon back in the applications menu.
However it would not print documents. I noticed that print preview was not enabled and clicked on the square by the word preview in the list of commands used for printing documents. I then was able to print some text. So at this stage it seems to be working, though I am not sure why. Before it started to print I was getting messages saying that the printer was idle or that there were a number of items in the stream. I have had a number of messages saying the printer was not configured, before it started to work. I don't really feel the problem has been solved because I do not understand what was needed in the printer configuration. I've done something right but do not know quite what, so it could all go wrong again, I think.

Thank you for your response. I cannot attach the screen shots as attachments in the normal way. How can I send them? Would you like me to email them or use another method via the forum? Thanks.

Re: Printer not working
I'm a beginner. Do you need the whole of the information on the terminal or just the last line. Are you asking for part of the output between (). Those are the only marks vaguely like the ones you used. Thanks again.

Re: Printer not working
I do not know what is going on. I saved screenshots of the terminal screens from each of the commands you gave me. I thought I would try to save then on to Libre Office Writer. When I looked for the screen shots where they were saved (Pictures) they were not there. When I tried to put the four commands into the terminal again none of them gave any output, unlike the first time. I am confused. Have you any idea what has happened and how I can generate the output needed? Thanks.
Re: Printer not working
I really haven't any idea why the outputs should be empty. Check the output ofStormdrainer wrote: ⤴Tue Feb 07, 2023 12:47 pm I do not know what is going on. Re: Printer not working
I made a really stupid mistake but have generated the answers again. The files are too big to attach. I was asked to post them between the <> icon. Could you please explain in more detail please. I am a beginner and do not understand what is wanted. The screenshots I have taken contain full pages of data and I need some way of posting them. Thanks.

I've entered the 4 commands Brian suggested and have saved the outputs to a file. Is it possible to give some advice now regarding my printer issue? Thanks.

Re: Printer not working
About a week ago Brian-p asked me to enter 4 commands and post the results. It took me a while to do this as I'm a beginner. Here are the commands asked for.
These are shown below and they are followed by the outputs they produced. I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me on what I need to do next to sort out my printer's performance. Thank you.

Re: Printer not working
Just a few questions I'd like to ask you..
1. How old is the printer?
2. Is it a inkjet printer?
I'm asking those questions because I think that the nozzles might have dried up blocking them, have you done a clean on the printer? I think you can do it via the printer itself, though I'm not sure. That is a one failure on inkjet printers, if you don't use them for a period of time the ink dries on the nozzle to a point where it hardens, making printing impossible. This could be a reason what maybe happening with you.
See if you can do a test print via the printer itself.
For memory if you are setting that printer up as wifi network printer, I think you still have to have it connected via usb until the setup is finished, I remember having to do it that for a mate on his windows machine, usb cable connected then install the software and select wifi setup. Talk about backwards.

Re: Printer not working
Thank you for your post. The printer is an inkjet printer. I have managed to print the odd page recently, but it repeatedly fails which is the problem I have at the moment. I think though that the occasional successes show that the ink jets are okay.
Re: Printer not working
Stormdrainer, my friend, you have done well. We now have something to work with. This is the crucial bit:Stormdrainer wrote: ⤴Wed Feb 15, 2023 9:52 am About a week ago Brian-p asked me to enter 4 commands and post the results. It took me a while to do this as I'm a beginner. Here are the commands asked for.
These are shown below and they are followed by the outputs they produced. I'd be really grateful if someone could advise me on what I need to do next to sort out my printer's performance. Thank you.
Here is a command:ipp://HP%20OfficeJet%205200%20series%20%5B738E74%5D%20(USB)._ipp._tcp.local/
Code: Select all
lpadmin -p OfficeJet5200 -v "ipp://HP%20OfficeJet%205200%20series%20%5B738E74%5D%20(USB)._ipp._tcp.local/" -E -m everywhere
Try
Code: Select all
lp -d OfficeJet5200 /etc/nsswitch.conf

Re: Printer not working
I've don e what you said and the printer produced a page of data. However when I tried to print something else, it did not work. I tried several times to print a page. Sometimes it stuck on the preview but sometimes it went on to the print page, but it did not print. I looked at the printer icon, and when I pressed the button I got the printers installed display which showed 5 printers, one with a yellow triangle with an ! in it. Some of the printers, on the printers installed page, have the correct labeling for my printer. Something is still causing a problem still. Thanks for your help.

Re: Printer not working
Just curious, and likely not an issue but are you using a firewall such as UFW or, on a router or KVM?

Re: Printer not working
I'm using Linux mint 21 basically straight out of the box. I think Ubuntu used UFW you in a firewall and mint is based on Ubuntu.
Re: Printer not working
That's good enough for me. The lpad command is as fundamental as it gets.Stormdrainer wrote: ⤴Wed Feb 22, 2023 6:47 am I've don e what you said and the printer produced a page of data.
Which application were you using? However when I tried to print something else, it did not work. I tried several times to print a page. Sometimes it stuck on the preview but sometimes it went on to the print page, but it did not print.
I am only interested in the OfficeJet5200 printer. It works to print nsswitch.conf. It should print everything else too.I looked at the printer icon, and when I pressed the button I got the printers installed display which showed 5 printers, one with a yellow triangle with an ! in it. Re: Printer not working
Thanks for your reply. I've taken a screeshot of the printers.. Should I delete some of these? I do not want to get rid of what I need. It has been working generally. Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.
