Just to check the obvious.... is your internet line quick enough to stream without occasional pauses due to your internet line not being able to keep up with the video?

Yes it works very well and never faced this problem but the thing is it also happens on the downloaded offline videos too.

Did you clean install to 21.1 or upgrade? ; if it was a upgrade I would try a clean install and see if the issue goes away.

when I play offline videos, like x264 720p/1080p I tend to use Celluloid paired with MPV (sudo apt install mpv) as then it uses hardware acceleration, assuming you can use that feature. see if that fairs any better. still, even if that works, and YouTube does not, I can see how this will be a problem as that would get quite annoying with obvious pauses every 5-6 seconds.

Out of your you inxi report:

Code: Select all

info: plank
Don't know what this is. I know Plank as a dock Linux application to pin programs on desktop. Not pre-installed on Cinnamon and definitely not needed.

Do you run vscode in the background? Used to be very buggy and heavy on system resources on Linux.
Locally stored video files stutter on Celluloid too?

If you run a live session of MInt (boot from a USB media without installing), do y experience stuttering as well?

Just a quick comment (which might not apply to OP)...

I would try Xfce to see if the video stuttering goes away. because at least on two out of the three computers I have, Cinnamon (and even MATE(which I don't care for in general)) has video stutter issues with Celluloid+MPV (this setup engages hardware acceleration which takes load off CPU) on 720p/1080p x264(h264) video, but it works without issue on Xfce.

that might not exactly apply in your case (since you mentioned YouTube etc), but when it comes to general video playback, given my experience here, Xfce seems like a safer all-around choice over Cinnamon across a wider range of hardware to avoid video playback stutter. but even when I had these problems I never noticed any obvious issues playing back video in browser (but it was probably using CPU without the GPU in my case I think when it comes to YouTube).

so I would be curious just to see the OP try Xfce to see if the stutter issues are resolved by simply using Xfce over Cinnamon.

p.s. the stutter on my main PC was not as obvious, but still there, where as on the slowest CPU I have on laptop (AMD E-300) the stutter there was fairly major/obvious. on main PC the stutter I could fix temporarily by ALT+F2 and then press 'r' and enter, which restarts Cinnamon and things are smooth once again but the issue returns in probably 24 hours or so (as I leave my main PC on all of the time). but on Xfce it seems to be rock stable on Mint 21.1-Xfce as I currently have 42 days of uptime and playing back video files (movies) of 720p/1080p with Celluloid(using MPV, so it uses hardware acceleration) everything works as expected with no stutter.

Having the same issues. Replaced cinnamon with xface. That didn't do the trick.

All videos stutter. YouTube, Netflix, offline videos I.e. mpeg, avi, mp4 on celluloid and vlc. They all stutter and pause/skip every five seconds.

I have the same problem. I upgraded from Linux mint 17 which was doing fine to 21 and then the problem started. It doesn’t matter what website it is or what browser. I’ve tried Firefox and Chromium. If I have the the browser maximized on my main 1440p monitor, the video will have a low frame rate. Resolution of the video doesn’t matter. Even on the lowest resolution it still is a problem. There are several ways to fix the problem. 1) If I move the window to my other 1080P monitor it will be fine 2) If I don’t have the window maximized but have it smaller (I can stretch it to almost be full size) that works 3) If I run the XFCE or MATE desktop environment that works 4) If I turn down the resolution of my main monitor to 1080p that works

I thought it was just my graphics card being old and couldn’t keep up with cinnamon’s fancy settings so I just got a 4060ti and the issue is still persisting. For now I'm using MATE and XFCE and I'm getting by. I feel like this is a bug that should be reported?

Did anybody find a solution for Cinnamon? Same pattern in my case. Playing videos with hardware decoding works fine on Xfce, but stutters on Cinnamon.

This exact issue is bothering me for a while too (on a Dell XPS15 9550). I observed that it would'nt happen just after reboot. Tried different kernels, but didn't help.

After reading this thread, i came to the conclusion that it should have something to do with cinnamon. So i restarted just cinnamon ([ALT]+[F2] r [ENTER]), and... the stuttering is gone ! (for now, will see how many minutes/hours this will last).

It's not a fix, but at least a temporary workaround.

Hello,

I've been have the same issues but somehow i managed to overcome them!

So at the Login screen where your username is there's a button that has two options - desktop environment. I changed it to default. And it worked for me!

So maybe you try the same. Good luck!
