Black Screen Error Linux mint [RYZEN 5 with Radeon Graphics]

Post by MinKeb »

Hey,
I am currently having an issue when switching NVIDIA profiles. So when i try to switch it tells me to log out and back in in order for the change to occur doing so gives me a black screen which then freezes my controls and it stays like that. After reboot i can see that the changes have taken place.
I also found a similar bug where when i open a specific folder which contains 208 videos with a size of 11.2 GB the computer stats loading the small thumbnails and the black screen happens although this time it freezes my controls as before but it doesn't stay black it shows me the screen where i can move the mouse but click nothing even the keyboard doesn't let me switch workplaces and periodically the black screens appears for a short moment and then it shows me the folder screen again mouse still working.
I tried entering the videos folder and exiting rapidly but the same event occurs. apart from doing the two stated above no other bugs have been witnessed.
If you have any idea on why its occurring please let me know also if you need more information i am happy to provide them to you.

I can confirm another occurrence of the same bug in fact i have just tried move the files to another place and download new videos (a smaller fraction of videos 11 to be precise) now both folders that contain the videos give me the issue although the one with the less number of files gives me the bug when i try to cut the files and paste them to another folder and the black screen is permanent.

AMD Ryzen 5 4600H with Radeon Graphics
I suggest you mention Ryzen or the graphics in the title to attract AMD users. My Intel based TUF F15 had problems with Nvidia in LM 20 and needed a new kernel but LM 21 arrived with that kernel installed. No more problems. Some AMD and Ryzen models add an extra layer of problems.

Test the 5.19 kernel. Use the Update Manager, shield icon at lower right, "View" menu -> Linux kernels. Install that 5.19 and reboot it.

Where are you switching Nvidia profiles? I ask because the nvidia-prime-applet which comes with Linux Mint is where we recommend switching and I am under the impression that advises one to reboot the computer for changes to take effect.

I have also seen people add applets for switching which cause issues so knowing where you are making changes is important.

Additionally, not all modes may work on your particular laptop. It depends on how ASUS designed your laptop as to how it will work.

Your output lists two display manager, but only LightDM comes with Linux Mint. Do you know how you added GDM3? You may be running into issues because of software you added.

I can confirm that changing the kernel to the 5.19 version didn't solve the problem.

Yes i do use applet to change profiles but it doesn't tell me to reboot in order to use a different profile.

No i don't know how it was added. Also i haven't played with the software side either apart from the usual updates and kernel changing and apps.

New insights on the folder issue have risen. I can enter the folder through different apps for example Bulk Rename and VLC. But using the regular Thunar File Manager activates the bug.

What profiles are you switching to and from? If you are in Intel-Powersave mode, the Nvidia driver is not loaded and you must reboot to get it loaded to change to either of the other two options.

If this is the correct link Product support for FA506ICB, there is a newer BIOS version available, 306.

You must have added something which also added GDM3. I have no guesses what it might have been.

Lots of Rob Savoury's PPAs are listed as software sources. If you do use all those repos and have installed all this third-party multimedia stuff, then you have drastically changed your Ubuntu base-system to say the least.

Can you try a vanilla live session of LM 21.1 to reproduce the freeze when you access your video folder? (Switching nvidia profiles on a live session doesn't make any sense)

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3
Follow along, put it back to lightdm. You use arrows, maybe spacebar, and enter keys(i think  ).

The first time it happened i was switching from power saving mode to on demand it told me to log out which i did and that caused the black screen to appear then the pc froze.
Now it seem to be fixed ive tried switching from power saving mode to on demand and back to power saving mode nothing weird Happened.
Although when entering the video folder after a short period around 3 seconds the black screen appears then disappears once and then the screen is frozen after until reboot (mouse can move but no clicking nor does the keyboard works and the last image the cursor was on stays in it).

Its the same overall effect just different triggers its why i am thinking of it as one bug
the first one its a black screen that doesn't go off and the other one its an alternating black screen
In the folder case its always the alternating black screen.

Power saving mode usually means the Nvidia driver is not loaded. I suggest you switch to that mode and reboot and then post the output of inxi -Gx so we can see what drivers are loaded. If the Nvidia driver is not loaded then that explains why you get a black screen.

If you switch to On-demand mode and the AMD GPU is being used, then you will have graphics because that driver is loaded.

If you switch to On-demand mode from Power-save mode and the Nvidia GPU is being used, but that driver is not loaded then you will get a black screen until you reboot the computer.

If you have booted while in On-demand mode then the drivers for both AMD and Nvidia are loaded and just logging out and logging back in again will work when switching to other modes.

The folder case is likely something completely different from the other issue. You are going to have to give more details of this folder for anyone to be able to help you. It could be an issue with Thunar and not related to graphics at all.
