No sound, new installation

Post by rimmer »

Upgraded PC to new Beelink GTi11 i5 1135G7 with Linux Mint 21.1 Vera. PC has Intel Smart Sound Technology for I2S Audio & MIPI Soundwire. No sound device detected, therefore no sound - shows 'dummy' in Pulseaudio. lspci shows 'Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation Tiger Lake-LP Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller (rev 20)'. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome to the forum, rimmer.

We have no idea what you installed and it is possible your system may need an upgrade rather than just an update. So please follow forum rules and provide your system information. Open the System Reports app and click the System Information tab on the left. Your computer's information should come up in the right pane. Then click Copy, and paste the results into a reply window here so we can see how Linux Mint views your hardware.

I also recommend you check the Tips for Troubleshooting Sound Issues Rev. 1.

Yes, the complete output is what we want to see.

This is one of the mini-desktop PCs?

What is the output of

Code: Select all

aplay -l
and

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "ALSA|HDA|sof[-]|HDMI|snd[_-]|sound|hda.codec|hda.intel"

Your sound could have worked out of the box but seems intel "tiger lake" audio controller is being "ill-mannered" under Linux
It has been nominally supported or at least detected by 3 different intel kernel drivers since Linux kernel 5.3 according to linux-hardware.org and support has proven inconsistent.
So if you're newcomer to Linux, get ready for a bumpy ride.

You could reload "manually" the driver:
sudo rmmod snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl
sudo modprobe snd_sof_pci_intel_tgl

but this should work in cases where you had audio working before.

Other reported solutions indicate that you may have to "bypass" or "opt for" one of the drivers at boot time. As you can see here, the same solution is not working for everyone.

Lastly you may also need the newest sof firmware but Ubuntu (and, therefore, Mint) already comes with the firmware-sof-signed package I bet pre-installed. Just in case latest firmware is available here so are the instructions about how to install it (not newbie-friendly).

Thank you for the suggestions. I tried most without any change. Before reaching out on the forum I had previously installed Ubuntu 20.04.1 & Lubuntu 20.04.2, as well as the latest 22.04.1. I've decided to shelve the project for now & extend my thanks for all your assistance.
