Incessant freezeups on Ideapad Y530

Problem: Without doing any specific task, my tuxtop randomly freezes. Sometimes, I'll get a sparkly display of random colors before the thing reboots. The problem prevents me from using this very cool distro full time; as a result, I primarily use Windows 7 (dual boot). On average, I probably venture into the Mint twice weekly for a few hours total. Of these few hours, I can typically expect at least 3 or 4 freezes and a couple reboots, again, irrespective of what applications/activities are going on.

This chap had the same problem (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/486300). He tried "downgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4 drivers as [he] saw recommended in one similar bug report with no success." That sounds really hairy. But, like him, I've disabled all the flashy Compiz effects with no change in frequency of freezups/reboots. In response to this chap's post, meanasspenguin mentioned the problem being at the kernel level, and did a custom build of 2.6.31.6, after which he experienced no freeze/reboot problems. This sounds even hairier. (I've seen numerous other posts with no substantive replies and even less content on which to troubleshoot.)

I suppose I'm down for learning/trying anything. I'd prefer have some feedback, though, rather than going about this thing alone while being mildly inept at Linux.

Anyone with similar problems who's found a solution?

Seems to me to be some hardware error
Windows may not be affected, it might use some other parts of memory
Run a memory test - there is an option in the grub boot menu
