256 MB RAM is way too little. I'm surprised you got KDE started. If it's a desktop it's no big deal to add a bit more
I recommend at least 128 MB more for the live CD. Iinstalled it can do with 256 MB (just - and there will be a lot of swapping)

one trick to get any Mint to install if low on memory is to create a swap partition of about 1G.
then boot off the mint CD (again if you used it to create the swap partition) and start the install.
mint will use the swap partition when live and so it runs much better.
