Multiple Desktop Display Configurations

Post by Haydndup »

Hi guys,

I have dabbled with Linux a few times in the past, but just ended up getting horribly lost. Now, I've been running Mint 8 for the past week or so without any hassles. Occasionally, I need to switch back to Windows 7 to run a few Matlab simulations (is there a decent Linux alternative?).

Currently, I use my laptop with docking station and extra screen when I am at home. I have them set up in an Nvidia TwinView configuration. When I'm not at home, I only use my laptop screen.

Now, in the past (with W7), whenever I unplugged my laptop from the docking station (thus disconnecting it from the extra screen), my display would be automatically reconfigured for one display. When I plugged back into the docking station, the extra screen would be used again.

Is there an easy way to do this with nvidia-settings, or is there a tool that can do it?

I initially though I could have two xorg.conf files - one for single display (xorg.one.conf), and one for two displays (xorg.two.conf). Then, I would write a bash script to replace xorg.conf with one of my two "template" configurations. After that, I would need to restart x-server.

This has two problems - it's not automatic, and it involves restarting X, so all my applications would close.

Any suggestions/pointers?

Thanks in advance!
