flashing wireless light stopping me from using laptop

Post by chucklepie » Thu Mar 25, 2010 7:31 pm

Hello,
I have just installed and started using Linux Mint 8. Which is very good, btw :)

However, there is something that is driving me mad. I have a laptop (HP nc6400) and the wireless indicator (which is is a blue light on the front and a button with a blue light on the keyboard) flashes non-stop with traffic and I simply cannot use the laptop properly.

I searched and found hundreds of entries from people with the same issue but not an answer.

Can somebody please help before I lose my sanity and give up on this distro.

btw, I did find something that had you create a file but that did nothing.

tbh, I don't know who's stupid idea it was to do this. On windows it was quite simple: on means wireless is enabled, off means disabled. I know when traffic is there as I can use the internet ;)

Thanks.

Please provide a little more info, per the forum rules, there is a link in the red bar above your original post.

Also, I am a little unclear about what you mean.

Does the wireless connection work, but the flashing of the blue light is irritating?
Does the wireless connection not work, the flashing light is an indication of this, and you are either using a wired connection or posting from another machine?

In addition to the information outlined in the forum rules, could you post the output from

Code: Select all

Welcome to Linux Mint
Go to the menu, go to system, go to drivers
Search & see what the extra driver tool shows for your system
Sometimes it will display more than 1 driver,for your wireless device, if brodcom STA driver is a choice , try it , install, reboot
I had this issue with my HP & installing the " other " fixed my blue light , among other issues.
I hope this helps, have a good day.

Hello,
After another hours searching I think I've found the answer, but I don't know quite how to automate it.

Basically, dawgdo,c everything is working fine, it's just the wireless indicator flashes not stop and it's all you see as you are typing and looking at the screen.

The solution I found was to create: /etc/network/if-up.d/wifi-led-noblink
and add:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
if [ "$IFACE" = "wlan0" ]; then
 for dir in /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0\:radio; do
  echo none > $dir/trigger
 done

 for dir in /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0\:assoc; do
  echo none > $dir/trigger
 done
fi
which didn't work.

However, I've just found this, which does:

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
#this script will prevent the wifi light from blinking when on.
#to activate this script, create a soft link to it in /etc/network/if-up.d/
echo none > /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0::RX/trigger
echo none > /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0::TX/trigger
echo none > /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0::radio/trigger
echo none > /sys/class/leds/iwl-phy0::assoc/trigger
Which worked when I ran it, but I have no idea what a 'soft link' is or how to get the system to automatically run it.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

Well, you can copy and paste the script into a text file, save it into the /etc/network/if-up.d directory (requires root privs), and then give it executable permissions (which again requires root privileges since it's in a read-only directory for any normal user) with a "chmod +x" command. An alternative is to create a symbolic link in your /etc/network/if-up.d directory (requires root privs) that links to a copy of the script which you've saved somewhere else. For example, assuming you saved your script in a text file in your Home directory, enter the following in a Terminal:

Code: Select all

chmod +x ~/<name of the script here>
cd /etc/network/if-up.d
sudo ln -s ~/<name of the script here>

Vincent's reply is spot on.

I don't have the flicker problem with my HP, but then I use the same Broadcom driver that Jay514 recommended.
