GLIBCXX gone missing overnight

Post by saarmae »

Hello,

booted up my laptop this morning, first thing i notice is that all icons from the desktop are missing. Then tried to use update, result:

Code: Select all

~ # apt update
apt-get: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by apt-get)
apt-get: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by apt-get)
apt-get: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6.so.4.8)
apt-get: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6.so.4.8)
And when i write aptitude in the terminal:

Code: Select all

~ # aptitude
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by aptitude)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by aptitude)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6.so.4.8)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libapt-pkg-libc6.10-6.so.4.8)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libept.so.0)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libept.so.0)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /usr/lib/libxapian.so.15)
aptitude: /lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.11' not found (required by /usr/lib/libxapian.so.15)
I have done nothing special lately with my Mint, last thing i did was installing Planeshift, maybe that caused it, but all worked well until reboot.
So i'm looking to find a fix here, don't bother posting "reinstall Linux Mint".

Hope you guys can help me.

Well since there are no solutions so far, some extra information:
I'm using Linux Mint 8 "Helena" Main edition.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Does dpkg work?

If so, try downloading the deb and running:

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i libstdc++6_4.4.1-4ubuntu8_i386.deb
If not, you can manually install it with:

Code: Select all

cd /
sudo ar -p /path/to/libstdc++6_4.4.1-4ubuntu8_i386.deb data.tar.gz | tar -xvpz
sudo ldconfig
sudo apt-get install --reinstall libstdc++6
The deb can be downloaded from here
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/libstdc++6

Not sure why it got removed. My only guess is some package got broken so apt decided to remove it and took out libstdc++ along with it.

I already reinstalled linux mint.

dpkg didn't work, tried it in recovery mode,
commands containing "apt"-anything didn't work.
Error messages were basically the same ones as above, i.e. "bla GLIBXX... not found bla".
