Renaming many files at once

Postby manishk » Thu Aug 16, 2007 4:55 am

I want to rename all the files in a folder to follow a pattern...something like file1, file2, file3 etc. How do I do it??

Not really knowing what precisely you want and what files we're dealing with here I think it would be too dangerous to give you a shell script that would do exactly what you wrote up there in that too short sentence. One typo and my script could ruin your system.

So I'd suggest you apt-get install the tool mmv and then read its man page ... e.g. man mmv

Thanks, I'll try both.

I dint explain the exact situation because I wanted a general solution, anyways heres what I want to do:

When I transfer pictures from a Nokia cell phone (or any camera for that matter) they come with strange names...I want to rename all the pictures at once.

Something like what happens in Win when you select all of then and rename at once.
