okay... a friend asked me to poke around and see if anyone has any ideas about this problem...

When connecting his new USB speakers to the cassandra gnome laptop he goes to the control center/sound and sets everything to USB... test shows okay and plays a sound...

every other program (i.e. amarok) however plays nothing at all...

has he disabled the onboard sound card in the laptop in the bios?

do the other apps have sound card selection options?

is there a setting somewhere to select which sound card the system is to use?

it may be a matter of install/setup of the system and the usb speakers/sound card were not plugged in and the other apps use the first sound card device listed.
you could look for the onboard sound card device in /dev/ and the one when the speakers are plugged in.
you may have to delete the origional and create a link from old to new. eg
sudo ln -s /dev/snd1 /dev/snd0
