Re: mint 9 update
I am also having this problem. I can't fix it, but from looking up a few things for ubuntu 10.04, it seems to be a network issue...or something like that. Which doesn't make a whole lot of sense since I can surf other things online fine.
Try this:

I was experiencing a similar problem myself.
Unless you've already changed one of these settings, what's basically happening is that NetworkManager is setting your router up as the DNS server, and the router should use your ISP's DNS server to resolve addresses. Somewhere in there, addresses aren't all being resolved correctly, hence "no address associated with hostname". If you want to see what's being used to resolve addresses, open /etc/resolv.conf
NetworkManager can easily be set up to always use a manually-specified DNS server when using a given network. Under "Edit Connections..." select the network where the issue is occurring (selecting the proper tab at the top, if necessary), and click Edit. Under the "IPv4 Settings" tab, set the Method to "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" and enter a third-party DNS server (e.g., Google's 8.8.8.8 ).
With any luck, this should solve your problem
Re: mint 9 update
Ugh. Ok, so, I decided to try editing connections in network manager as shown, and boy oh boy, was that a mistake. Now I have no connectivity at all. (typing this on another machine)
I'd backed up resolv.conf info before trying this, so I figured just restoring that would fix everything, but it didn't. Bummer.
If I figure out how to get back to normal, will let u know.

Re: mint 9 update
If it had broken your connectivity, the easy fix would have been simply to remove the DNS server you had just added, and change back the setting "Method" for getting addresses.
Such a strange issue...

Re: mint 9 update
Yes, you'd think that would work, and that's indeed what I tried.
Turns out, I needed to completely reboot after reverting back. I'd logged out, but that wasn't enough.
Rebooted, and I'm back. I won't be trying that again.
But the update errors are getting annoying, though not as annoying as being offline would be. LOL.

Re: mint 9 update
Thanks for the post. It works for me!
I don't know why this works. I have been using Mint for at least 3 years and at the end of the Mint 8 cycle, I began getting these errors ... “failed to fetch” and hadn't made any changes to my system. Couldn't figure it out, followed many instructions, so I switched over to Ubuntu because I wasn't sure if the system was properly updated. Didn't have the errors with Ubuntu, however, prefer Mint, hands down.
Followed your instructions and now everything updates. I have kept Mint on my spare machine and will revert both machines to Mint now.
