How do you create a iso image

Post by whammy »

Hi all, I have been using mint since version 7 now and have a general Linux question. Is there any linux software i.e. free for creating an iso image that can be used on say for instance a usb creator software of which I believe there a 3 main flavours. As far as I am aware you need a iso image of the particular linux distro to create a bootable version on the usb stick. I know you can download these iso images on the net but I have a very slow and limited internet connection so can't realy go down that route. I have been looking at the free discs you get on the Linux magazines but I can't seem to find the iso images on these discs, is there a way of creating a iso image from these discs, I know you can run them as live cd's and install them to a hard drive.
To cut a long story short I am looking to put various Linux distros on usb sticks and leave my Mint on the hard drive

Any suggestions ???
Thanks
PS I have tried various windows software such as WINISO but they are not free and I could not make head nor tail of it anyway

Command line and a mkisofs-program does the best .ISO ..

http://linuxcommand.org/man_pages/mkisofs8.html

1. Collect all "iso-files" to the building folder

2. Make an .ISO image

You probably will need this package.

An example:

If the building-folder is my_iso

mkisofs -R -b boot/grub/stage2_eltorito -V "Debris" -no-emul-boot \-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o Debris.iso my_iso

The free installation CD/DVDs you can get from a magazine or order on line are one large ISO file that takes up the entire disk. If you place the disk in your computer, mount it, and open the file, you are looking at the contents of the ISO file.

NOTE:
The following works in Nautilus (Gnome file manager) but I can't say if it will work in Thunar (Xfce), Dolphin (KDE), or any other file manager. I only tested it in Nautilus.

A way to get an ISO file onto your hard drive so you can make a flash drive copy is to insert the CD/DVD into your computer while the computer is running and copy the entire contents of the CD/DVD as a unit from /media to /home/username/downloads or another convenient folder in your /home directory. This should be done as root (open the /media folder using the "Open as administrator" command in the context menu) and the permissions on the copied folder should be changed from /(root) to your user name.

Once the ISO file is stored, it can be used to burn a CD/DVD or flash drive to boot and install to any computer.

not sure what your trying to do, but I use ISO master to make my iso's that are not an OS its self.

Just drag and drop the files to be included in the iso then export to a raw iso.

So your downloading the ISO's then adding them in mass to a ISO to be written to say CD or DVD ?

Easy to do. Don't know of a way to make them all auto install.

Better to pick the distro like mint, add all the apps and updates etc you want.

Then spin a redistributable ISO that you can then install on any pc.

OR

you can download all debs, add them to the raw iso image then write to disk and install on fresh install.

pick were to save the iso and that is it.

Easy as it gets.

Once the iso is done, you can write the iso to USB or disk.

Curious, I show them both installed and working no problem. To my knowledge iso master uses genisoimage.

I think there is a little problem though....you're running the gnome version and I'm running kde, so what you're showing in your screenshots is gnome and different to what I have

Wazzup boys? :D

I am on KDE but not on Mint just now

However, iso master can be downloaded from here:
http://www.littlesvr.ca/isomaster/download/
(you will need to compile it by yourself but even with someone help it shouldn't be a problem, right? :))

or

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/is ... ld/2537390
(not sure what that version is like, check it out).

Or this source info could be helpful too:

http://www.multimediaboom.com/create-an ... in-ubuntu/

As for ppa you can try to modify your distro name at the end of the ppa line...

Or another ifo page yet :D
