No Wireless on Newly Installed Linux Mint [SOLVED]

Hello again! It seems like one solution always leads to another question!

I recently succeeded in downloading LinuxMint onto my laptop. I should say that before I had Windows on it, then I boot nuked it to try to make more room. Once I got it installed I tried to get online and it said the internet wasn't connected.

I typed in iwconfig and got this

lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

Does anyone have any idea whaat this means? Also there was an update for the wireless when I first logged in but it wouldn't work. There was some kind of error.

I have a Compaq Presario M2010US. I'm not sure what kind of wireless chip it has, but this is the closest thing I found when I tried to look it up

I bet you'll find the solution here: http://www.linlap.com/wiki/hp-compaq+presario+m2000. Yours probably needs the same wireless driver.

there was an update for the wireless when I first logged in but it wouldn't work. There was some kind of error.

You need to connect via ethernet cable (or some other non-wireless connection) and then find hardware drivers in the menu. The error would have been that you couldn't download the driver because you weren't connected to the internet.

Alternatively you need the windows drivers for the wireless card and use the windows wireless drivers utility (also in the menu) to install them.

If you need more help you should return the output of the following terminal command:

I tried connecting to the internet via ethernet but it still wouldn't connect to the internet.

What I don't understand is why I can't use wireless now with linuxmint (Isadora) when I could before I erased windows? If it's the same computer shouldn't it work regarless of whether it's Linux or Windows? If the ethernet doesn't work does that mean I have to buy a new driver?

Hi Vindurauga,
Please before you do anything to the driver check your network manager if wired and wireless connections are enabled, I don't think there is anything wrong with the drivers, if the network manager is OK but you still cannot connect to internet check your modem settings under adsl and wireless settings tabs. just to let you know what has gone wrong is that while you had windows in your computer the modem recognized the computer now without windows it can't, did you run windows alongside with Linux Mint or did you erased windows and then installed Linux Mint? Thats what went wrong when I erased windows and installed Linux and I had to reset the modem and my wireless settings so I could connect.

Have you tried this simple Broadcom fix? Works on _buntu base 9.10, 10.04 & 10.10. Don't worry that it talks about Dell too.

vin i just googled the realtek nic you have and it looks like that has had real problems with linux and win xp too . I hate to say this but your best option might be to get hold of a usb wireless dongle with good linux support or bite the bullet and get a legal copy of windows to put on there. EDIT aparantly I did not read his output close enough . I bow to remoulders better reading and knowledge.

All this means is you are not connected to a wireless network, it does signify however that the system has a driver for your wifi card and has initialised it successfully. As mintnewbie suggested, have you checked that the laptop's wifi toggle switch or function key is ON and that networking and wireless are enabled by right mousing the network manager tray icon? If they are, left mousing the NM tray icon should display a list of networks within range, click to connect and enter the key if required.

If NM doesn't show any networks, open a terminal and type iwlist wlan0 scan. This should display a list of wifi networks if any are within range, post the output back here.

To answer mintnewbie, I boot nuked everything before putting linux mint Isadora on my computer. I'm not running windows side by side or anything.

I pused the wireless button on my laptop to turn on the wireless, but it won't even light up anymore. I left clicked the Network Icon and Wireless is Enabled, Networking is Enabled, and Notifications are Enabled. When I right click it it says No Network Connection.

All of this worked before I installed Linux. If all of the hardware is ok all I need to figure out is how to make the computer recognize it again, it that right? Also I couldn't try the solution 1002richards suggested because I can't connect to the internet through ethernet either.

If I read that right it looks like you picked the wrong firmware for your wireless seems like you may have picked b43 legacy instead of the other one since yours is b/g capable. I'm not sure if you have to modify anything or just reload the correct driver. Perhaps someone with more knowledge than me could answer that .

You do not appear to have the broadcom firmware installed, have you run Hardware Drivers in the Administration menu and installed all the drivers from there? If there are none listed or all are already active, check in synaptic package manager if b43-fwcutter is installed. If not install it, you will need a cabled internet connection in order for it to download the firmware.

Hey!
That worked! I'm proud to say that this is my first post in the LinuxMint form from my new Linux computer!

I don't know if it was just my faulty old Ethernet cable or what, but after a few tries I was finally able to connect to the Internet through the wired connection. From there it was easy to just activate the wireless driver. Now that I have wireless, the possibilities are endless! I know this was a pretty easy fix in the end but (especially as a Newbie) i really appreciate your help!
