CD won't auto-mount Mint

Post by oboedad55 » Thu Oct 28, 2010 12:02 am

Hi, I'm running Mint 9 and have a weird problem. After the system has been up and running a while CD drives will no longer auto-mount. I had this same problem in Ubuntu 10.04. If I boot up with a CD in the drive it works. Right after I boot up the CD will be recognized, but after a while it just goes away and I have to reboot if I want it back. I've Googled this to death and posted the same question in the Ubuntu forums but I can't get any love. Any ideas would be appreciated.

A kernel upgrade from Synaptic helped me the last time with this issue; http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=53531, you could try that...

Sounds like the exact same problem I had with Mint 9 / Ubuntu 10.04

This fix worked for me

FYI I don't have this problem in Mint 10 / Ubuntu 10.10

Thanks for the reply. I tried this fix but my computer just hangs on bootup. If you find anything else please post back.

The kernel upgrade worked for me the second time around, you shouldn't sniff at the possibility, you know..http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... 16#p336716 :)

OK, I installed kernel 2.6.34. We'll see what happens. I'll be thrilled if this actually fixes the problem. Will report back.

Well, still no love. I put in a blank disc and after a few minutes the icon disappears, just winks out. I have to reboot to get it back. Any ideas, no matter how far-fetched, would be appreciated.

I just installed kernel 2.6.35 and the DVD icon has been on my desktop for a whole thirty minutes, a new record. If this finally fixes things I will be thrilled. Thanks for the suggestion on the new kernel.

Well, I don't want to get too excited yet but it's still working. The system has been up for a bout 90 minutes and the DVD icon is still there. That's already a record. FWIW, I installed kernel 2.6.35-RC and I go it here: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Hopefully it will help someone else as I have read of this problem many times.

I am not sure if getting the absolute latest is such a good idea, the problem is a recurrent one and it would be better to have something in reserve to fall back on (haven't tried the downgrading option yet, from all indications, that should work just as well)..treating this as a shot-in-the-dark workaround, of course.

Well, I didn't remove the other kernels so there's no harm. If it didn't boot I just pick another kernel. I don't see any issue. Besides the fact that this problem is nearly a deal-breaker anyway. Just to be clear, here is the link to the kernel I installed that is working as we speak:

No, no..having a new or old kernel that is already installed doesn't help..it's the process of a new kernel installation that inexplicably fixes the issue....

If you say so. That doesn't explain why the other kernels didn't work and this one does. By your logic I could just reinstall the old kernel and get the result I did.

You could, although i wouldn't attribute it to any logic...

In the FWIW department, over in the Ubuntu forums there has been a thread about this same issue in Lucid. It has been fixed by several peoples as described above, to which we owe the original suggestion of a new kernel a debt of gratitude. Here is the link;

I am very happy for all you guys; incidentally the guy who suggested the thing and the one who "chimed in" are both me.
I know i am imposing, but could you for the "sake of science", try installing one of the old kernels just once more (the one that didn't do the trick), and confirm for ever, whether there is any consistency if not logic (other than that indicated by the few random cases where it worked), to this quirky fix ?
