[SOLVED] File type / Application, association problem

Post by alquimista »

Hi

I uninstalled Wine 1.2 since it was causing problems and not working well. Then, trying to open files like .doc or .xls, the system still tryed to open it with Wine / MS Office, even when WIne was uninstalled. When I wanted to associate the .doc and .xls files to openOffice or IBM Symphony using the "open with" option in Dolphin, and selecting openOffice for example to have it allways opening .doc files... the "processing" windows never sopted and I hade to press the cancel button; the file association was not done. How can I fix it and get rid of wine associations?

Hi.

Have you tried to "completely" remove wine?

I know you've already done
sudo apt-get remove wine

But how about these?
rm -rf $HOME/.wine
rm -f $HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
rm -rf $HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*
rm -f $HOME/.local/share/icons/????_*.xpm

I have this same issue where wine core exe shows up when I right click and select "Open With" on a JPG image. I have already removed WINE and I tried the RM commands for the directories above.

Any idea how to remove these?

One more rm command I forgot in my last post:

Code: Select all

rm ~/.local/share/applications/wine-extension*

That last command fixed it. Thanks a million!

Whoa whoa whoa!

Theirs no need to remove Wine just to solve a file type problem!

edit the file: ~/.local/share/application/mimeapps.list

Code: Select all

[Added Associations]
video/x-msvideo=totem.desktop;vlc.desktop;
video/x-matroska=totem.desktop;vlc.desktop;
application/octet-stream=gedit.desktop;
Simply change the default app in the list!

Code: Select all

[Added Associations]
video/x-msvideo=vlc.desktop;
video/x-matroska=vlc.desktop;
application/octet-stream=gedit.desktop;

There is actually a very big need for "alquimista" and "JonM33" to remove wine. Don't you read the posts before you reply?

the problem with editing that file is it doesnt recognize the filetype. works fine for text files, but why would you want to associate something that is a media file file geany abiword or the like? The problem there is theres only one file. Yea Id say filetype associations are broken, at least in lxde
