mint box as a file share

Postby sharpey00 » Sun Nov 11, 2007 3:42 pm

Hello folks,

Just bailed on windows xp, I bought a mac and love it, and I'm trying to turn my old PC into a file server with mint. I have the software installed and it's running great, the mint distribution is nice. I've installed samba, and I can find the shares from my mac, but I cannot log in. I also can't change my samba config file.

Supernoob I know so be gentle- but I'm not trying to be fancy, just want to use this hard drive as an external share. Any suggestions?

Hi sharpey00,

The first and probably best bit of advice I can provide, is that search is your friend. These days, someone else has usually encountered whatever problem you might be having.

Here are some threads to get you on your way:

You need admin rights to change the samba config file. Open a terminal and enter

Code: Select all

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf

Have a look at the above posts and then come back with questions if you're still stuck.
