How to Disable Trackpoint or touchpad?

Post by howagood »

Is there any way, using LinuxMint, to disable built-in pointer devices, such as a TrackPoint or TouchPad?
Thanks.

Yes, but first - check your laptop's documentation. Most laptops tend to have keyboard shortcut that is hard-coded to enable/disable the touchpad (on my Acer it's <Fn>+<F7>

If not, then look at this guide and you should be able to work it out;-

You can install gpointing-device-settings which lets you change the settings of a touchpad. I use use to suppress the touchpad's double-click.

I installed mint 10 gnome on an hp mini 210-1010NR netbook. In the Fedora related world people use a sourceforge app called jupiter. Among other things it allows you to toggle the touchpad on and off. I followed the instructions from http://www.webupd8.org/2010/07/jupiter- ... power.html
to install jupiter and then set keybindings with instructions from http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/j ... eybindings to set up (in my case) a binding to SHIFT-SUPER-X. I needed the keybinding because if you use the applet to disable the touchpad when you have an external mouse plugged in and then shutdown, the touchpad is disabled on the next reboot and you need an external mouse in order to click the applet for jupiter.

Another option.

Touchpad Indicator places an icon of a touchpad in the notification area of your panel. Clicking on the icon allows you to toggle the touchpad on and off.
