install graphic card *.run

im very new to linux, my first day running it, i have linux mint11.
i try to install drivers for my graphic card, Ati radeon HD 5670, i went to amd site and download driver for this card, for linux x86.
file name is: ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run
how ever when i try to run it i get message : "could not open the file /home/.../ati-driver..." , gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. please check that you not trying to open binary file. and give me option to select char encoding...

im really not understand nothing about linux, have any1 got solution for my problem?

11.5 wont install into natty, thus mint 11 ether. Driver is made for Maverick.

your card will run on the cat 11.4 equivalent built into mint 11/Ubuntu natty

Just use the additional driver tool found in administration. Activate the ATI FGLRX driver.

FYI to install .run

Just right click and select permissions. Check the executable box.

Now double click and select run.

willie i did as it say in your link, or as guru say at end of post, it worked perfectly and was very simple.

11.5 works fine in natty/mint 11, I'm using it now :) you just need to use --buildpkg ubuntu/natty and install the generated .deb files

Just download to a temp folder, right click in the folder and select open in terminal.

Code: Select all

sudo sh ati-driver-installer-11-5-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg Ubuntu/natty
Then

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i *deb
