Can't run Mint 11 DVD - Weird screen. Black rectangles

Post by Agnostix »

Hi All,

I've encountered my first Mint problem, so here's my first post on the Newbie forum!

I'm trying to run a Mint 11 DVD on an old ex-XP Pro desktop.
Whenever I boot from the DVD, the splash screen shows (eventually)
but when booting ends there are irregular black 'patches' all over the wallpaper.
The cursor moves freely and can open the menu but when I click on an icon nothing works,
There's a faint, momentary flash of activity and that's it!
There are more black lines in the menu, under the application names.
The only way to shut the computer down is by killing the power.
There should be enough RAM in the old bus to run the updated OS
but nothing loads or works properly.
Am I right in thinking that it's probably a graphics issue?

Please note that exactly the same issue occurred on this machine after upgrading from Ubuntu 10 to 11:4.
Mint 10 is the current OS and it works just fine (as did Ubuntu 10 and Kubuntu 10 previously).
The DVD works properly on another machine, so the fault isn't there.

Here are some details which might be helpful:
Graphics: Card Intel 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller X.Org 1.9.0
Res: 1280x1024@60.0hz GLX Renderer Mesa DRI
Intel 865G GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT x86/MMX/SSE2 GLX
Version 1.3 Mesa 7.9-devel
Monitor: Samsung SyncMaster 913n

I look forward to reading any suggestions.

Thanks in advance

Try running it with nomodset

see what happens.

Just tells it to NOT use kernel driver for GPU and use software drivers.

When you get the initial GRUB menu (the one with the boot options, press <TAB> to edit the boot command line. Replace the words 'quiet' and 'splash' with 'nomodeset' and press <ENTER> to run.
Removing 'quiet' and 'splash' allows you to see the messages on screen so it is easier to diagnose any problems
Adding 'nomodeset' puts it into a lower, more compatible, graphics mode and solves 90% of the boot problems on the Live image.

Thanks

The nomodeset tweak has fixed the graphics problem.
No more black rectangles and it seems that everything is working properly.
It still takes ages to load from DVD but it's fine once it gets going.

What if I choose to install the new version?
Can it be set up so that I don't have to adjust the GRUB menu during each boot up?

Yes. With a bit of luck, installing it will cure the graphics problem. If not, then you can modify it for a single boot from GRUB (the screen looks different, but the principle is the same). Then run all the upgrades and install the correct graphics driver.

Thanks

I'll probably start off by installing alongside Mint 10,
just in case things go wrong!

Same problem for me with the live dvd. I did run the nomodeset option and got booted up ok. How do I get the resolution to boot off the dvd at 1440x900 resolution? I am new to Mint and attempted to change the screen res after I booted nomodeset. I found the display options in control center, but they are static. I cannot change them. Is there any way fo force the resolution when booting to the Mint11 live DVD? Any help would be appreciated!

Here are the hardware summaries I get when I boot to my Mint10 distro:

what your going to want to do is create a USB install disk with persistence.

Boot with nomodeset , then install Nvidia / ati drivers etc.

Restart and wala, rez and full GPU support. You can still install from a usb live drive with persistence.

Now your going to ask HOW to do this ?

Linux = startup disk creator

Windows = Linux pin drive creator

Just simply format the USB flash drive of choice (fat format), pick the ISO,set the size of persistence (startup disk creator auto sets it to 2 or 4 GB based on size of USB drive), Let it do its thing. Then simply boot to the USB drive, persistence allows changes to be remembered.

Now if that sounded confusing or hard. Relax, it really is quite simple.

I installed Mint 11 alongside Mint 10, replacing 'quiet' and 'splash' with 'nomodeset' in GRUB.
It started well and all was fine until the PC was rebooted.
It then went straight back to it's old tricks.

The issue is that Mint 11 won't run properly on this PC unless the above change is made during each start up.
Not the end of the world, but it is likely to become a pain after a while.
Is there any way of making GRUB remember the 'nomodeset' change?

Have tried switching from Compiz to Metacity (on the basis that anything is worth trying) but that made no difference.

Thanks again

To change it permanently;-

after the install, edit /etc/default/grub and change these lines to look like this:

#GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset"

But... You are better off doing it as a temporary change and trying to get the correct driver installed to run your graphics card in the mode it is designed to run in.

If you need help with that, please post the outputs of;-
$ sudo lspci
$ inxi -G

I would rather switch to the correct driver than subdue things with 'nomodeset', assuming it's possible

Just ran the commands 'sudo lspci' and 'inxi -G' in Terminal (on Mint 10).

For the 'sudo lspci' I got:

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82865G/PE/P DRAM Controller/Host-Hub Interface (rev 02)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82865G Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

For 'inxi -G' I got:

I have the same problem with black rectangles when I try to install Linux Mint 11. I have LM8 on one of my desktops and have had no problems, but when I try to update to LM 11, black rectangles all over the place. On boot up, I pressed tab and got a line command screen with the word "boot". Could you please step me through how to replace the words with "nomodeset". Thank you very much.

Everyone; I apologize. I just had a "duh" moment. The reason that I couldn't get the nomodeset to work was because I pressed the wrong key. Sorry. Problem solved. Thanks anyway.

If you go under 'Administration' / 'Additional Drivers', does it list any available drivers to install?

I've given up on Mint 11 for the time being as I couldn't sort the driver issues.
Have installed LMDE instead now and it's fine.
Another set of issues to deal with of course
but at least this works out of the box on the machine.
