Linux Mint Randomly Crashes to Log-In Screen

Hey all, I'm having an extremely annoying issue with the latest version of Linux Mint that I'm hoping someone can help me resolve.

I'll be messing around on my laptop, when all of a sudden Mint will crash to the login screen (this seems to happen more often when I'm watching a Flash video). Needless to say, this can be quite annoying (especially since I've never experienced this with previous versions of Mint on my laptop).

Any advice/tips?

In these cases the trouble is understanding what causes the crash. What you can do in order to let us know what happens is doing the following: the next time the computer crashes, login once again and open your terminal. Then post the output of:

I have been having the same problem. I notice it the most when websurfing (maybe flash stuff, didn't take that close of a notice). As requested to the original poster, I have included my cat output

Hi there, I have been using Linux mint for about 3 years now without any problems whatsoever, but now I have exactly the same problem as described in this post.

Random crashes to the Login screen.

It has happened:
1) While copying files
2) During a Skype Video call
3) While surfing

What should I do, re install Linux Mint 10?? :mrgreen:

I have the same problem.

I think it only happens when I'm using the proprietary nvidia drivers. Are you using these?

I'd like to uninstall the nvidia drivers but I'm not sure how at this stage how exactly I do that...

I have an ATI card.
I haven't actually seen the problem in a few days. I am wondering if one of the recent updates fixed the problem.

I am not using Nvidia nor ATI. My graphics chip is a plain old Intel graphics in a Lenovo T61 laptop. It just happened again after a number of days without any crashes.

I am using DUAL monitors: the laptop screen and an external 19 inch Samsung screen.
