alternative to xmodmap?

Post by amandawillow »

I have an almost two-year-old ASUS eeepc 900, and Caps Lock key began acting up all of sudden from time to time since two weeks ago. This happens one day and stops happening another day, only to come back later.

Usually xmodmap -e "remove lock = Caps_Lock" works, but when Caps Lock has gone nuts as soon as I boot the machine up, xmodmap returns an error message, something along the line of "xmodmap: please release the following keys within 2 seconds..." and xmodmap does not work.

Is there another way to disable Caps Lock key even when it has gone nuts? This is becoming a major nuisance.....

Perhaps something is stuck under the key? Making it act funky. You could consider pulling of the key, giving it a good cleaning. Most keyboards are designed so the key caps can be replaced. Wiggle it from one side using a flat (not sharp) object for leverage.

If your using an Ubuntu based version you might install "Xkeycaps" , start it in terminal and set capslock to whatever you want.........
