No Sound in Mint 11

Post by jerry7171 »

Hello all,

I've installed Mint 11 (Katya) on my HP/Compaq dc7600 ultra slim desktop with Pentium 4, 3 GHz, 2 GB memory, 500 GB HD. I have absolutely no sound anywhere. I've opened Alsamixer in terminal but I'm uncertain what to look for. It doesn't appear to be muted anywhere. I've checked the sound properties and there is no muting engaged there either.

I ran inxi -F and got the following:

Don't know if this will help but i had once lost my sound and the solution turned out to be quite simple. that is open sound preference > hardware and change profile to analog stereo duplex.

I checked, but it was already on Analog Stereo Duplex under the profiles. No change there.

Thanks for the link. It helped clarify what I am looking at in AlsaMixer. Strangely enough, I have no Speaker or Headphone connected via AlsaMixer. That might go a long ways towards explaining the lack of audio. So now I need to run down how to get Mint to recognise that I have an internal speaker or at least be aware when I connect external speakers.

okay i can think of three things beware they all might be useless!!
1) the MM sign means mute OO means open, theres a MM under under front mi( which i think is mic), try changing all MM signs to OO ( you do that by highlighting the specific thing and typing m on your keyboard)
2) try checking the bios to see if theres anything stopping the speakers from there ( most PCs you do that by holding F2 just after switching on the comp)
3) check and see if output in sound preference looks like this

Thank you for the link... I followed the instructions on the page and ran into unexpected errors...

Step 1.
jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC260

Step 2. (this is where I ran into the first problem of permission denial)
jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz
bash: /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/HD-Audio-Models.txt.gz: Permission denied

Step 3. (I tried getting the Alsa file by the 2nd method suggested and ran into another permission denial)
jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz
bash: /usr/share/doc/alsa-base/driver/ALSA-Configuration.txt.gz: Permission denied

Luckily, the page had a link for HD-Audio-Models so I was able to look there for the ALC260 for my computer which appeared to be hp-dc7600 within the list.I then followed the next set of instructions which seemed a bit baffling.

Step 4.
jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
[sudo] password for jerry:

Step 5.
options snd-hda-intel model=hp-dc7600

Step 6. (I saved the file, then did the following and all the text below scrolled by... I'm no expert but by my best guess Mint didn't like what I tried to do)
jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ sudo alsa force-reload

So did I just hose my system down? I have to chuckle a little as I can't believe how stubborn my computer is being.

gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

add at the very end:

options snd-hda-intel index=0 model=auto

alsa-base.conf

Code: Select all

install sound-slot-0 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-0
install sound-slot-1 /sbin/modprobe snd-card-1

Okay first thing don't panic (if you are) its a good thing you saved your original setting that way you can revert back any time. secondly if your not so familiar with the terminal you can always navigate using the windows manager both /usr and /etc are in the root(file system) folder. To edit them just open the them as an administrator.

I just attempted wyrdoak's solution and this is what scrolled up in Terminal:

jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

(gedit:26416): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory

(gedit:26416): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to store changes into `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: Failed to create file '/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel.CBHGZV': No such file or directory

(gedit:26416): Gtk-WARNING **: Attempting to set the permissions of `/root/.local/share/recently-used.xbel', but failed: No such file or directory

When I run the requested command by AlbertP, this is what Terminal displays:

jerry@jerry-HP-Compaq-dc7600-Ultra-slim-Desktop ~ $ cat /proc/asound/card0/codec* | grep Codec
Codec: Realtek ALC260

it should work but anyway try this gksudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and then follow wyrdoak's instructions. and if that doesn't work try going there through a windows manager.

I've seen that same set of 4 error messages every time I try to run "gksudo gedit" (or "gksu gedit") under Mint 11 - but it never seems to actually cause any harm to anything. As I reverted to Isadora I didn't bother to troubleshoot it, but it won't make any difference to editing a file for your Audio as I had to do exactly the same thing and it worked fine. Basically those error messages are a red herring and won't stop your changes from doing what they should.

I don't know why gedit started throwing out security error when trying to change a file, for it doesn't seem to hinder it from the actual doing the job just complaints while doing it.

SUCCESS!

After getting home from work, I tried out Viper's suggestion of drilling down using the windows manager then applied wyrdoak's suggestion solution. One thing I did was to strip out the hp-dc-7600 from the alsa-base page. After that, the sound came blasting through the speakers after a reboot of the computer. Hoorah! Thank you so much everyone!

hey good to know it works. @wyrdoak it seems to be some kind of a gedit bug http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.p ... 31433.html.
