Mint 11 dvd won't boot, Mint 8 dvd will

Post by mag » Fri Aug 26, 2011 8:48 am

Hello,
I am having a first play with linux.

The machine I want to run it on is an emachines E4062, Intel Pentium D 805 2.66GHz twin processor.

My first attempt was with the mint 11 live dvd. It starts to load, and I get the intro screen, but after the 'loading casper' messages I get a 'ready', then a blank screen (sometimes with the 'loading' cursor circle in the middle of it). Nothing else happens.

I've tried booting from a live usb - same outcome.

The MD5 for the iso checked out ok, and it runs OK on a newer machine, so the download is OK.

I have also tried a mint 8 live dvd. That loads fine, and installs fine.

Any help with how I can get mint 11 to load much appreciated.

Thanks

mag

Thanks - that has moved things along.

nomodeset acpi=off got the live dvd running fine, so after playing for a bit I installed to HDD.

Now I get to the login screen and the mouse and keyboard freeze, so I can't log in!

Further advice greatly appreciated.

Update - Mint 11 will run on the machine in recovery mode with low graphics selected - so it does appear to be a graphics problem as you thought

The video card is ATI Radeon Xpress 200.

I have run all the available updates in update manager - but the problem persists.

Any thoughts on what I need to do to get it to boot normally anyone?

many thanks

If you downloaded LMDE 201012 32-bit and all you're getting is a black screen, you might just be a kernel argument away from a successful boot. The solution is to download 201101, but you can save 1GB of download and a new DVD by using the following arguments:

* For ATI chipsets: radeon.modeset=0
* For nVidia chipsets: xforcevesa or nomodeset
* For GeForce and Generic: nouveau.modeset=0
* For Intel: i915.modeset=0

This should give you a live session in low resolution. Since the embedded kernel is already up-to-date, you don't need to configure anything post-installation and your system should then boot in high resolution."

Thanks for the input.

Maybe I'm not following, but I think I got beyond that problem.

nomodeset got my live cd running fine.

I then installed to HDD.

Now when I try to log in I get a screen freeze. Booting to recovery mode/low graphics is a workaround -but not a sensible one for the several users of this machine - I need it to just boot normally for mint to be usable.

Thanks
mag.

When Mint has booted up, open terminal and run commands

gksudo gedit /etc/default/grub

.... remove quiet splash and add a sensible code eg. nomodeset

GRUB_DEFAULT=0
#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="nomodeset"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

...... save and quit

sudo update-grub

Thanks very much.

OK, nomodeset didn't work :(

acpi=off got me logged in - but only one processor was apparently working and fan speed control wasn't working :!:

pci=noacpi in grub has got both processors and fan speed control working.

I'm not sure what else it might have affected, and whether it is safe for long term use, but for the time being it is a workaround. :D

Now - anyone know what the proper long term solution is - any different drivers I need for the ATI Radeon Xpress 200 card?

Many thanks

Well, I played around with a few driver updates, but the furthest I got was Mint 11 working with pnpacpi=off.

I now have Mint 11 on both my systems, and it works flawlessly on my laptop (intel cards). Windows is still there, but i've not found a need to use it recently.

Thanks to the Mint team for a great free OS (and to the Debian and Ubuntu teams, who must also have helped a bit!)
