[SOLVED] Update Manager vs Synaptic Package Manager

Post by mag » Sun Oct 30, 2011 6:27 am

I keep Mint 11 fully up to date with Update manager, however if I go to Synaptic package manager there are a lot of things showing as 'Installed (upgradable), including some quite significant looking things such as linux kernel and xorg.

Do I need to/should I be applying those upgrades? :?:

Thanks

If you investigate Update Manager, you will find that it has different "levels" of updates.

The default is to upgrade packages from levels 1-3. Things like xorg and kernel updates are level 4 & 5. The rationale is that your system will be more stable if you do not perform serious system package upgrades.

Of course, you can change this behaviour and enable level 4 & 5 in Update Manager and get all the updates - as shown in Package Manager.

Thank you for your help.

Since Mint 11 is working just fine without the level 4 and 5 upgrades I think I'll leave well alone!
