Linux Mint & Unity

Post by wpshooter » Mon Oct 31, 2011 9:52 am

Are there any plans in the works (that you know of) for Linux Mint to go and spoil a perfectly good operating system by switching from Gnome interface to that "Unity" interface like Ubuntu has done recently ?

Thanks.

I read on the forums that for Mint 12, they still haven't decided on what to make it look like, Gnome 2 or 3.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see...but I sure hope its not Unity looking desktop.

from the Mint Blog:
Linux Mint 12 “Lisa” will be released in November this year with continued support for Gnome 2 but also with the introduction of Gnome 3. The radical changes introduced by the Gnome project split the community. At the time of releasing Linux Mint 11 we decided it was too early to adopt Gnome 3. This time around, the decision isn’t as simple. Gnome 3.2 is more mature and we can see the potential of this new desktop and use it to implement something that can look and behave better than anything based on Gnome 2. Of course, we’re starting from scratch and this process will take time and span across multiple releases. Until then, it’s important we continue to support the traditional Gnome 2 desktop. We’re likely to release two separate editions, one for Gnome 2.32 and one for Gnome 3.2. We’re also working in cooperation with the MATE project (which is a fork of Gnome 2) at the moment to see if we can make both desktops compatible in an effort to let you run both Gnome 2 (or MATE) and Gnome 3 on the same system, either in Linux Mint 12, or for the future.

How do you run unity on Mint 11? One of my machines runs ubuntu 11.10 with unity. I happen to like the unity interface. Unfortunately, I don't know how to switch between interfaces on either ubuntu or mint.

podagee, I tried your fix, and it worked beautifully. No issues with my computer yet. My desktop doesnt look as good as your screenshots, but I can live with that while I figure out how to dress it up. One question: Is it possible that my computer is running both the gnome and unity interfaces at the same time? I have the unity icon bar on the side of the screen, but also have the traditional menu button in the bottom left of the screen. It doesnt appear to cause any problems as yet. Do you foresee any issues with that? Is there a way to fix that?

another thing i advise is going into synaptic package manager type in mint menu and remove that otherwise once in a while when you log in youll have the mint menu instead of the shell causing you to log in and out.just remove it so it works everytime you log in.

to switch between desktops in 11.10,when typing password there is a little gear where it says your username, just click it and select.gnome 3 is really nice on 11.10.and for mint, when logging in,typing in your password, bottom left corner of the log in window, just click it
