Linux Mint & Samsung NC10 Netbook...

Post by erko » Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:05 pm

I am currently awaiting the stable version of Mint 12 (out of the RC) in 32-bit. The Samsung NC10 Netbook is presently running WIN XP. I'd like a dual-boot set-up. Is Mint feasible in this particular Netbook machine? And, because of the absence of an on-board CD/DVD drive burner/player, an external CD/DVD player would be used to install from a DVD, via USB connection. Will it work? And how do I actually and successfully load the Mint OS using the external CD/DVD drive?

(BTW & FYI, after much time and frustration, I was finally [it almost seemed like an accident] able to load Mint v/ 11 on an older Windows XP HP Notebook, and it works generally just fine - less stable than Windows - but, I do like the Mint v/ 11 OS, which totally replaced WIN XP!)

Thak you much in advance!

To boot from USB CD/DVD drive, just set your BIOS to try to boot to you USB device first, then you could just leave it that way, for if there is no bootable medium in the device it will just ignore it and go on to the next. I use the USB CD?DVD drive to do all my installs. After I get something I like, I've been using a CD of clonezilla to back up the linux partition on a external drive, just in case I mess up real bad and don't want redo my work and go though the install process again.

I dual boot with Win7

Here's my NetBook:

I installed Mint 12 RC DVD edition using UNetbootin which is in synaptic and installs from a usb drive. No need for a cd or dvd drive.
More information here http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ you just need a USB flash memory stick.

I don't dual-boot, and run Mint11 at this moment, I can tell you it's running just fine on my NC10-KA06NL. 4-5 hours worth battery-time, no battery-issues with the kernel, almost all important FN-keys work, just not brightness-keys, enable/disable WiFi and Scroll Lock.

Mind you, I've upgraded mine to 2GB of RAM, but 1GB should be well enough.

Running Mint11, with AWN instead of Gnome-panels, and Firefox opened:

Code: Select all

free
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 2050304 1167604 882700 0 89800 575324
-/+ buffers/cache: 502480 1547824
I saw my hardware differs from what wyrdoak posted, so here's mine:

Code: Select all

00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Memory Controller Hub (rev 03)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03)

Have fun!! :)

Thanks, all!

I'm still percolating on this one...

Anakinholland, thanks! :)
Any windows sizing dificulties in your Samsung Netbook w/ Mint 11? How about the unit's Touchpad, any problems (I realize that the NC10's touchpad left very much to be desired even in Windows XP - not the greatest hardware component in the NC10)? What version of Mint 11 are you running? I'm running v/ 11 "Katya" in my HP notebook. "Running Mint11, with AWN instead of Gnome-panels, and Firefox opened" >>>I, frankly, don't know what that means?! And, BTW, I had bumped-up my Samsung NC10's RAM and HD, considerably.

This is all very new to me, and I have more questions about compatibility issues w/ my NC10 and Mint, but I'll hold-off and wait for response to the above, first ....if that is okay here?!

Thank you all so much for your time, effort ...and patience!

There's little issues with sizing and most of those times it can be solved by maximizing the window, so the program knows to present a scroll-bar if it doesn't all fit. The touchpad functions well, it's a bit too sensitive for my liking, but not enough for me to want to change it.

I'm running Mint11 Main edition, so based on Ubuntu, with Gnome as the session manager. However, I did replace the default window manager (gnome-panels) with Avant Window Navigator (AWN), making it look a bit more sexy. The remark I made about Firefox, etc., was just meant to give some perspective on what applications were running when I posted the memory-usage.

I made notes on what I did and installed here.

Good luck!
